  • Zuiko 12-60mm lens question.

    Hi all,

Recently my Olympus Zuiko four thirds 12-60mm packed up the fault being it was stuck on full aprature. As it had a few years of use I decided rather than get it repaired I'd purchase a new one. The new lens is as good as my previous one, however there are a couple of things that puzzle me. The original lens was made in Japan while the new one is manufactured in China, both lens caps and the hood are made in Japan. Now the differences, my original one had the 12 and 18mm markings on the zoom ring close together, whereas the new lens has them spaced a relatively fair distance apart. The serial number on the original is a series of numbers, however this new 12-60mm has AC followed by numbers (none of my other Zuiko lens numbers are alpha numeric). My question : does anyone know if there are actually two versions of the Zuiko 12-60mm four thirds lens? If there is, to date I've never seen any comments referring to this. Thank you in advance.

    Re: Zuiko 12-60mm lens question.

    Hello, welcome to the forum.

I believe the move to China was due to several factors following the "troubles" within Olympus and the environmental issues in Japan.

As for the changes in the lens, I think they were small, as you describe due to different supply sources in China and the design & specification remained largly the same.

It was and still is a very good lens that a lot of people rated highly.

Not merely "very good" - "up there with the very best" according to dpreview!

Many thanks for the welcome and the replies. Got to agree the lens is excellent and as far as I can see image for image there's no difference to the original one prior to it going faulty. Cheers Ron.

It would have been cheaper to repair. It is a common fault with the 12-60 it is a failure of a flexibly printed circuit board and with Oly it was cheaper than Luton cameras when I had mine sorted.
