E-3 Autofocus problems

HELP! E-3 Autofocus problems

I use my e-3 set to S-AF, and find the camera does very strange things if the self-timer sensor at the left hand side of the camera is covered the uncovered. The camera indicates focus lock repeatedly, but this is not achieved. Anyone any ideas?

Tried this on my E-3 and it works perfectly OK with and without the sensor covered.
