I'm curious to know what is happening to sharpen your images once they come off the camera, as the standard JPEGs from the E-1 were actually notoriously somewhat soft! One of the first firmware updates was to add more sharpening to respond to some of the early criticism.
Thanks again Jon, I think I confused the issue somewhat, I meant I had turned the sharpening down to 0 this morning before taking some more images - I will try and upload some for comparison.
Here are some from today, I turned down some of the camera jpg settings after yesterday's well received shots (), but conditions were quite different today:

The E-1 has quite muted sharpening in-camera, which is why I suspect the over-sharpening we've seen is a post-processing issue when re-sizing for the Web.
Thanks Ian,
I loaded them onto the PC using Lightroom 3.6 and then exported them to a file setting a max of 512kb and a longest side of 800px. I think the box was ticked for 'sharpen for screen' but I am not on the same computer at the moment - will check later.
Cheers
Iain
That should have been fine In fact I use 230K limit for 800 pixel wide shots in LR.
I also acquired an E-1 and I'm so pleased with it. I've found that the E-1 produces more saturated images but I quite like it and I like both your goose shot and the waterfall.
Like you I'm still learning how to get the best out of it and this post has been very helpful.
What firmware version the camera has has never crossed my mind. How do you check?

Hi Patchwork This page tells you how and what it all means.
Good luck and enjoy!
The E1 is a stunning little camera, grossly underrated because of the 4/3rds sensor. Bought mine about a year after it was introduced; whilst the preview screen is a bit small, it does do the job and the menu system is refreshingly uncomplicated. For street photography, it's in it's element, being unobtrusive because you can wrap your hands around the body. The position of the on/off switch is excellent, and it's location is one of the things which I wish was continued over onto the E3,5 and OM-D. About the only failing I ever encountered with mine, was the grip material coming loose on the rear of the body. However, after a while I realised that without it, the buttons were a bit more easy to locate when not looking, or with gloves on, so never bothered replacing it.
As for the ultrasonic dust cleaner, that is just brilliant! So far, I have never encountered any dust and that's after changing the camera lenses in some fairly inhospitable locations. It's a little gem, and proves that you don't need buckets of megapixels to get good photographs.
