Semi-tethered shooting

I've been playing around using the Olympus supplied AV cable from the USB multi-port connected to my LG LCD TV and found that this lets me shoot "semi-tethered"

The camera LCD screen view is transferred to the TV screen but I have still to operate the camera using the on-board controls

This will be of use for when I do sessions showing others how I use the camera (I have one shortly at my camera club on shooting bubble macros and videos which was what prompted me to look at this option again)

Is anyone else using this function and if so, have you spotted any snags?

I use "tethered" shooting quite a lot and really miss not having the full Studio 2 control that was enjoyed with the E-System cameras.

I am trying all sorts of things to get a similar functionality, including WiFi and iPhone "apps" to get close to what we once had.

I've even built my own Multi-Lead that allows TV viewing and Focus/Shutter control.

I could not believe it when I saw that the new version of Viewer, did not provide for WiFi download or "Watch Folder". I wrote to the technical people at Olympus and received a very nice reply, saying it was an excellent idea to include it and that it will be passed on as a suggestion to Head office.

Hopefully, some new firmware and Viewer 3.1 will address this function.

PS. Just read Ian's review of the Panasonic Lumix GF6 - The WiFi Connectivity is just what we need on Olympus Cameras...

Graham, thanks for your input, I'm interested in your home made multi-lead, do you have a write up somewhere of how you made it?

I am using the EyFi card to download .jpg files direct to my ASUS Transformer but would love to have a proper WiFi or even tethered active link as I did with my canon bodies through the canon DPP software. It was a really useful system and, like you, I'm desperate a proper solution rather than this work-around

If you are thinking of making one, then I'd suggest starting with the AV lead as that has both the wires to send the video signal to the TV and the cross connections in the Multi-Plug that sets the camera to stream the live view to the TV.

Then add the shutter connections from another lead.

thanks Graham, I'll need to study that a bit before I decide if my wiring skills are up to it (haven't done anything like that for more than 30 years! )
