  • 5 mk2 switches off

Took my pre-loved 5 mk 2 for a spin today and just used the Oly 25 1.8. It takes a nice picture and I love it. However today, and on previous outings, the camera seems to switch itself off for no reason. Flicking the power switch to off and back on solves it but it is irritating. Have gone through the settings and `sleep` is off and the `auto power off` is set to off. Anyone have any experience of this? Still loved using it though and restricting myself to just one prime lens made a refreshing change from my usual zooms.

Lovely images, I too have an E-M5 mark ii and enjoy using it with the 25mm 1.8. I have the opposite problem, mine won't switch off, there is something wrong with the switch mechanism on the top plate of the camera and it doesn't seem worthwhile having it repaired.
I don't have an answer for you, but do you have more than one battery? If so, does it behave the same with each? Are the battery terminals clean? Can you tell if the battery is loose in the camera - might be a break in the contact?
Just some thoughts, hope you find a solution.

Thanks Iain, good suggestions. I do have more than one battery so will work through your ideas.

    Nice shots by the way.

And you are sure this isn't a sleep timer setting or does the camera power off erratically?

Could you have accidentally pressed the LCD screen button on the top plate? I have done this a few times and wondered why I couldn't see anything through the viewfinder (I almost always have the screen turned in - in fact I still have the plastic film on it!)

I also had a similar problem with my E-M5 mkii last week, in my case it didn't seem to want to switch on but after a few minutes I tried again and it was fine. This happened a few times during that day but it seems ok now, seems likely I did the above.

I like the shots, presumably the canal is navigable.

Will check that Andy, thanks. Yes parts of the canal are in use, work underway on other bits. Some sections sadly built over.

That's the same with the Cromford Canal although a 3000 yd collapsed tunnel, a National Grid gas site mean it's extremely unlikely any restoration will go beyond Golden Valley if it gets that far.

Lovely set Tim, what happened in shot 2, was it windy?

Ah no MJ, its me trying out something called the Orton Effect in post processing. Luminar 4 has a button for it.
