  • Mine's on order, but which MMF should I get?

My first upgrade for my beloved E-5 is on order. An E-M5 mkii is in the post. Later in the year I will be getting an E-M1 mkii as well, which will then become my first camera with the EM-5 a back-up. (I'll then probably sell my E-5. )

I've ordered the ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens to start with, and I have several E system lenses that I'll use initially. Most of them are the standard quality lenses, which perform exceptionally well, but I also have a couple of better quality lenses too.

    Which adaptor should I order?

I was about to get the weather-sealed mmf-3 to go with my 12-60 1:2.8-4 SWD lens, but I then saw a thread on DP Review of someone dismayed by the build quality. I know that lens won't be as fast on the E-M5ii, but I am expecting better performance with the E-M1ii. Is it strong enough? Can I hang the camera around my neck with that lens attached

Would I be better off getting the mmf-1 and having the stronger build and foregoing the weather sealing?

Or, should I give up on the idea of using my 4/3 lenses, sell them and buy one decent m4/3 zoom.

It would be great to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Ivor

I believe the MMF-3 is the only weather sealed adapter so is ideally suited for use with either of the mark IIs and your 12-60.

I tried the 11-22mm with the MMF3 today and no problem at all, focusing was fine and lens weight not an issue.

I have used a Bigma with mine , usually carry by the lens when walking about.

I've used the mmf3 with a 12-60 on an EM1 (+grip) for three years and not had a single thought about its robustness. I've also used the 70-300 lens with no problem either. It seems solid enough.

Agreed, I have no qualms about the MMF-3 when used with my 50-200 or 12-60.

The MMF3 is very well built IMO. I used it with the 12-60 now it is permenantly attached to my Sigma 105.

This is the DP Review thread I read. Glad you have debunked it!

I used the 50-200 with my EM1.1 when I had the lens and now use the only 43rds lens I have (the 7-14 f4) which is still big and heavy, with no issues.

I have the Panasonic MA1. The build quality is superb - fully metal etc. But, it's not weather-sealed. The MMF-3 is weather-sealed, but it can't be denied that it's plastic. This may be a good thing - it's significantly lighter for a start and of course plastic is less susceptible to temperature effects and of course it'll deform and recover (read - it'll withstand a drop better).

I've been happily using the MMF-3 with all sorts of lenses - including in the rain. But with big lenses I am always careful to support the weight by the lens rather than the body to avoid undue stress on the lens mount and strap lugs, regardless of whether there is an adapter in between.

I've bought one! It's seems fine. It is a plastic body with metal mounting plates, but very robust and all the lenses are rock solid when attached to it.

                            Thanks everyone for your help!

p.s. My socks have been blown off by the quality of my E-M5 mk II and the 45mm f/1.8 mft lens I bought with it is a cracker. Glad I can still use my 12-60.
