  • M1X and E-M1 Mk3, In between a rock and a hard place.

My M1X is due tomorrow, Friday.

My E-M1 Mk2 is packed awaiting collection tomorrow, Friday, for PX against the M1X.......One in one out, so to speak.

I'll be honest if the rumour about the Mk3 had happened yesterday I would not be waiting for the M1X.

Dilemma..........Should I cancel the order, hang on to the Mk2 and return the M1X unopened, (I have 14 days), and wait for the Mk3

    Or continue with the deal?

I know it's a decision I alone have to make, and I aint got long to do it, your thoughts might be helpful.

Seems to me that the E-M1X and the E-M1 are pitching at slightly different markets. If a large, gripped body is what you want (big lenses, sports/wildlife etc) then the X is the way to go. Otherwise, go for the EM1. As to whether the mk iii will offer things over the mk ii that you need/want - who knows? We have no details.

I suspect the EM1.3 will have either HHHR and/or a higher res sensor. If either of these are important in a smaller body, then wait. OTOH, I doubt that AF will improve any, so if that's what's important and you want/prefer a larger body, then stick with the X.

Not with some people, not really, no

Not overly impressed with being told to "but (sic) out"

    Decision made.......go ahead with PX.

Why, because of a owner report given by 'RedRobin'.........

I bought my first Olympus camera, a M1X, last November after years shooting Canon (which I also love) but the smaller and more weatherproofed M1X Pro system is much more enabling as a wildlife photographer. The m1X is as if Olympus had designed a m4/3 mirrorless Canon 1DX and also improved it. I like it so much that I have bought a second M1X body so I don't have to miss shots while changing lenses and also avoiding risk of debris etc entering internally.
So, absolutely no regrets whatsoever. In fact, the contrary!

AND the hope of a substantial FW update for the Tokyo Olympics.

look at it this way Dave ,for a start its a rumour , if true once out prices will be at a premium , the e.mix will also probably have a firmware update soon to to keep its parity above consumer levels . and as well as that if a mk3 does appear the trade in value of the mk 2 will go down and probably quiet abruptly
to sum up stick to your guns its always fun to learn a new camera the E.MiX has stunning reviews so just go ahead and get it

P.S ask robin to post the pic of his brand new E.MiX in the piss pouring rain and its still working well

I'll just also add... I suspect that the true Oly m43 flagship is actually not the X, but the E-M1. The X is niche and probably not a big seller. The E-M1 is Oly's bread-and-butter high end model and so should be the showcase of the latest tech & features. If you look at Canon, you can see this quite clearly where the 5D range consistently has the latest tech with the 1D lagging behind, but pitched at hardcore pro/advanced amateur users where its sheer size and robustness suit its intended use in sports and wildlife.

So, my opinion is that the EM1.3 will leapfrog the EM1.2 and the X in tech and features - but the X will probably still remain the better body for hardcore wildlife and sports photographers. Choose your poison!

I think you made the right decision. Many on here offered the same advice as I would. The tempting thing about the supposed new camera, if it were a Mk3 would be if they added a joystick like the X has. I thought about and had a moment of GAS for the E-M1X, but it doesn't bring that much new to the table for me. Live ND, I can buy a filter, HHHR, I never used the high res. Then 2 weeks after the X came out they had the firmware update for the E-M1 Mk2, and for me that fixed any issues I had. AI is nice, but I just got done with the airshow here in Las Vegas and the C-AF worked better than the person holding the camera, no bad shots unless I blew it. I hope you enjoy the E-M1X and get many years of happy service out of it, Oly make great cameras and the X is one of their best yet.

I'm going to wait regardless of what the mkiii brings, as I have a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that the extra processing that the x offers is going to be "necessary" to get the best out of the 150-400 and similar lenses!

I met with Dave Smith of Olympus yesterday and I got the feeling that there are major firmware updates due for the mkii and the x before the mkiii gets on sale (he was very non-comital, this is me reading between the lines)

I think you've made the right decision sticking with the x

Now that does sound interesting , more firmware updates do seem to be a better way of keeping customer loyalty than ever increasing new models with minor changes as per Nikon’s way

I am enjoying my EM1X - not using it to its full effect yet but I'm sure you will.

            Have fun and enjoyment.

I’m clearly behind the times only just purchased mk2 yesterday lol. Some cracking deals on the EM1X though. SRS said they have literally sold Olympus cameras for fun over the past few days.

Personally, I think you would be better off waiting for the E=M1 MkIII announcement, if it happens, in February. To be competitive, I think The E-M1 needs a new sensor and a new processor with much-improved C-AF. If it turns out that the MkIII is not announced in February or it doesn't have new tech and recycles the old tech yet again, then buy the E-M1X. If the 1 MkIII does have a lot of new tech, wait for the new camera.

I am not at all convinced by the X's AI focus subject acquisition. It seems to me that, when there are similar subjects in the view, say three cars (not that I'm interested in cars!), it is not easy to influence which one the camera chooses to focus on. I'm basing thiss on my understanding of the X without having used it much so I could be wrong about this. But I would prefer to have a tracking system like Sony's real-time tracking which sticks with a subject tenaciously once I have acquired it. I pick the car/bird and then the camera tracks it. Also, everyone said after the E-M1X was released that Olympus would add new subjects such as birds and animals. Well, we are a year on and it hasn't happened yet! Also, I don't want to have to choose my subject in advance. If I'm at the nature reserve photographing birds and then a otter comes along, I can't be diving into the menus to change the target subject!

                Just my 2c...

                  Yes, I'm going to wait.

Phew it was close call though.

The X arrived this AM, the M1 Mkll was sitting in the hall awaiting collection by the same delivery driver. I had already notified SRS of my intention to cancel the X and hang onto the MKll.
No problem, Parcelforce will be here on Monday to collect the X, I'm on first name terms with the driver

I unpacked the the Mkll, put it back together, strap etc, now I'm trying to remember ALL the setting, where did I put that cheat sheet

When I got the Mkll out of it's box I thought what a beaut it is it's more than adequate for my needs.

probably the right decision at this moment in time Dave its a waiting game .. and in view of our conversations over the last couple of days I would consider spending the money you saved on upgrading your P/P software . Lightroom CC classic also gives you photoshop in the bundle so you far more processing power available and its constantly updated unlike the buy once alternatives . posted a few more shots in the bird thread this morning make your own mind up

Surely you had saved the settings to the file that the Olympus app saves prior to applying a firmware update....
