  • E-M10ii - weird behaviour using key line art filter. Help?!

Tried this over at MU-43 but no responses, so thought I'd try here:

    Here’s a puzzler:

Using my beloved E-M10ii with a SanDisk Extreme 90MB/s 32GB card. Shooting RAW & jpeg. Switched to Art mode, took a couple of pics using the dramatic tone and vintage filters then decided to try the key line filter.

Took the shot, saw the writing to disk icon then the screens went blank, the shutter appeared to fire again then I got the vintage filter look when the screen came back on and there was no key line image recorded. Weird!

    Happened a few times.

    My guesses would be:

    1. Camera is dying (pause while I have a bit of a weep)
    2. Key line creates large files and the card writing took so long it timed out somehow? But why the second shutter?
    3. Card dying? But why the second shutter?

Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what it could be? Some reassurance that I don’t need a new camera would be great!

    Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

    Steve

I've got the same camera but haven't used the Art Filters often.
I tried a quick test with Key Line art mode - just the default none of the additional options under the sub menu.
Preview on the screen was instant but once focus is made there's more definition to the image.
I'm using RAW+JPG and saving took not much longer than a regular image.
I don't think the files are dramatically larger and the image processing seems to be quick enough to drive the live screen so I wouldn't expect too much more processing on the final shot.

Were you shooting in very low light? There are noise reduction options for very long exposures that take a second shot with the shutter closed as a mask to clean up the image after the initial exposure.

    My thoughts would be
    - try a regular image and a Key Line image in good light one after the other and compare the speed.
    - try a different SD card
    - If all else fails note down all your settings and customisations then do a factory reset on the camera.

    Good luck!

      Hi

      Thanks for the response!

I was shooting in a very bright Scarborough on Tuesday. When I get a second I’ll upload a few examples as well as trying your suggestions. Haven’t had any issues with the camera after that, so if I’ve lost key line then it’s not a big loss (I can always add it in post if I’m desperate)!

      Cheers!

Yes, you can add any of the Art filters to the ORF file in Workspace if you so desire.
If you want to quickly fill your SD card then the Art Bracket function is great
I did take one of the Eiffel Tower from a tourist cruise boat. Olympus were doing an Art filter competition and I figured the shot gun approach might yield a result but in the end I wasn't pleased with any of them.
