  • In camera zoom on image taken

When viewing images shot, images recorded in raw, if my daughter zooms in to 14x some of her images look superb, nice sharp detail etc. However when downloading tge image to the computer the images don't look great.

Yesterday we were taking images of Marsh Harriers Ava had a couple of really good sharp images when zoomed in on the Camera, eye detail, beak etc at 14x. However downloading snd importing to the pc the images all look a bit poor.

Now I'm not really into post processing other than, crop, press auto for the levels, export to photoshop to use topaz denoise and sharpen if required. So it may be my bad procesding turning these images really poor - but any thoughts?

What software are you using to display the images once you have them on the computer? I wonder if you are actually looking at the lower-resolution preview that is embedded in the raw files rather than the real image data.

Using lightroom, just modding those files.

I find with Lightroom that it can sometimes take a l-o-n-g time to generate proper previews. Until it has, it will show the embedded JPEG preview which can behave just as you describe. I think it tells you when it's doing it though, and if you leave it to sort itself out you should see the "real thing".

I've found that viewing images on the camera's LCD can be a bit frustrating, particularly at 14x zoom. I shoot in raw and believe the camera shows the jpg preview image.

When zoomed in, I see jpg artefacts and that makes it difficult to check focus accurately. This is on E-M1 MkII and OM-1.

Some how, I never believe that LCD. Can't blame the software as I use the OM workspace.

I never chimp my images until they are on my PC in front of me- saves disappointment lol - Ill generally check the 1st shot and then adjust settings as required, auto ISO takes care of any subsequent adjustments
in my experience the LCD on camera is never an option to check on IQ
