  • Focus assist peaking with 17mm f1.8

MF assist peaking works with my two pro lenses when the lenses' MF clutch is engaged (i.e. using the lens' direct drive MF). But the peaking does not work on my 17mm f1.8 lens (bought on Saturday) when the clutch is engaged. Is this normal?

The MK peaking works on all lenses with the clutch disengaged and the body's MF selected.

I have just updated all firmware.

I've just checked my one, and it's like your one. It only shows peaking when the body MF selected. I've never noticed that before!

Maybe that's why the 17mm is not labelled "Pro" :-)

        Same here.

Thinking about it it seems logical. The manual clutch feature is called by Olympus "Snapshot" and is intended to be used for "zone focusing" ie. preseting the focus to give an in focus range determined by the focus distance and depth of focus read from the scale on the lens and remove the need to "wait" for either auto focus or manual focus on subjects of opportunity.

This does of course raise the question of why they allow Peaking to be automatically selected when the clutch is engaged on "Pro" lenses.

        Regards.

Resurrecting an old thread: I've just discovered the same with my Oly 12mm. I'm normally on S-AF+MF with peaking invoked when I manually focus with the shutter button half down. If I have the Oly 12mm on and pull the clutch back, the rear screen display says MF and twisting the ring does indeed ater the focus, but I don't get peaking. If instead I change to MF using the camera (I use Fn2 for this but same applies if I use the SCP) then peaking is provided as normal. In fact as I have Fn2 set up this way, I don't see the clutch as providing me any extra value.

ETA: Just updated lens firmnware. The description suggested a change in this general area, but still no peaking with clutch.

The early lenses with the clutches don't put the camera into focus assist mode. It's just the way it is!

FWIW after reading this the last time I enabled peaking on the Fn2 button (Em-10) - using the clutch doesn't enable peaking but if I then press Fn2 then it works fine.
I just need to remember to use it
