I stopped by Southeastern Camera in Raleigh today, and they had a couple of OM-D E-M1 cameras in stock. Quite frankly, I was happy to see one here in the US, and I was very pleased that they let me handle it. A good camera store.
My first impression is wow, that camera is really small. I haven't seen that many m43 cameras in person (and I am an Olympus enthusiast), so that was somewhat of a surprise. However, the grip feels really nice, and it was comfortable to handle. Definitely much smaller and lighter than my E-520, but not too small.
The viewfinder is very nice, and that was a surprise to me. I think the last EVF I used was on a Canon Powershot S3, so the E-M1 is a major improvement. No smearing in marginal to good light, and only some hesitation when looking into the shadows. Overall, much, much better than I expected and definitely not a show stopper.
They let me try focusing my ZD 50-200mm Mk I lens with it, and I was able to compare the auto focus with my E-3. I was surprised that the autofocus with the EM-1 was virtually indistinguishable from my E-3 in good light, and perhaps even better in poor light. The handling with a large lens was not bad, but I would want the vertical grip. Again, not a show stopper.
Now I would like to get an E-M1, but I do need to figure out if I can really afford it. The E-M1 is not cheap (about $2,000 with a grip, MMF3, extra batteries, and taxes), so the cost is a concern but at least I could use my 43rds lenses and flashes. Nonetheless, I do feel much better about my old 43rds gear since there is a new body that will work with my lenses and flashes.
As I understand from the employees at the store, the OM-D cameras are one of their best selling systems which is good news.
