OM-D E-M1 applications using Wifi

I'd like to write applications for the OM-D E-M1, including making use of the Wifi capability. Unfortunately, the current SDK available from Olympus doesn't support the OM-D E-M1 (I've asked when support might be available).

In the meantime, I've been poking around and found that the camera IP address, when Wifi is running, is 192.168.0.10. If you point your phone/tablet browser to this address (type the numbers exactly as written in the address bar), you'll see the camera's web page... this lets you browse the pictures stored on the SD card.

This is very much a background project, but I'll post anything else I find of interest in this thread and hope anyone else interested might do the same.

What sort of applications do you have in mind? Are you writing them for the Android or Apple platform?

Not really sure... some kind of tethered operation is one obvious thing, of course. Android and PC, probably in that order.

Took a couple of rounds of emails to get a straight answer, but here it is:

Q. I understand that the OM-D E-M1 is not currently supported by the SDK. I'm asking if there is a plan to offer support?
A. Currently there are no plans to support SDK.

Somewhat short-sighted of Olympus, in my view, but they must think there's some valuable IP they're protecting by keeping the interface proprietary.

Further investigation suggests Olympus may be doing odd thngs in their WiFi network to obfuscate the interface (maybe changing IP addresses etc.)... pity as I don't have time to invest in reverse engineering to that extent.

Steve, it sounds like "please don't mess with apps for our product" which sounds logical as there are teething probs ... it is easier to sort inhouse

Problems such as the lock-ups being reported are down to the firmware, not the apps driving the camera (I don't think anyone has reported a problem when using the app). It's a simple choice for a technology vendor: keep the interface in-house and limit users to the software provided or open it up and let a community develop around the technology.

History shows that good products with a more open attitude from their vendor can lead to a vibrant community and produce apps that the vendor would not either have imagined or been able to develop a business case for the necessary investment.

Even with Olympus' stance, if the attraction is strong enough, there will be someone willing to reverse engineer the interface. Unfortunately, I don't have the spare time needed to devote to this, apart from occasional dabbling... if I make a breakthrough, I will report it here, though.
