  • E-M1 Motorsport 90-250 F2:8

Today I got to use the E-M1 on one of my favourite subjects Motorsport-Rallying.
I used two lens 12-60swd & 90-250 F2:8. I have been very pleased with there performance on the E-M1 focus is fast and without hunting. Both C-AF & C-AF Tracking were tried I settled on C-AF as when using tracking whilst panning it didn't do a good job staying on the cars. Early days will experiement again. IS was switched off. I learnt previously to turn "Rec view" off otherwise you can't see what you are doing whilst using continous shooting. Nice weather today so I used ISO on low for many of the shots.

    Here's a few from today
    90-250mm @ 132mm

    12-60mm @ 27mm

    90-250mm @ 132mm

    90-250mm @ 180mm

    12-60mm @ 18mm

    90-250mm @ 180mm

Well these all look like good results. How pleased are you with the results in comparison to what you have used before? Are they better sharpness wise, more keepers etc.

My type of motor sport is now taking its winter rest so I will have to wait to next year before testing the EM1, should be used to its dial and buttons by then. I also am finding the C-AF + tracking difficult I tried in on planes stacking for LHR and despite a blue sky and the plane being the only contrast thing in the sky it danced all round the frame and refused to lock on.

Very nice set of pictures Derek, and the little camera seems to handle that big lens pretty well

I was thinking the same thing about the Escorts.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Early days but the keeper rate is good, I did muck some shots up experimenting with different settings. Compared to the E-5 the burst frame rate is much improved. I very pleased with the results I have zoomed right in on some of the raw files and the detail is very good. Sharpness wise there is an improvement, as the weather was good today is was using between 100 & 320 ISO, so didn't try and high ISO. I have 2 more rallies this month 3 if I wanted to drive to Wales. I will have to wait until the new season to try it out on bikes.

More and more Escorts seem to appear each year. I think there must as many rallying now as in 1980. They are the mainstay of historic rallying. Today's historic section had 17 cars 15 Escorts mk1 & 2.

                      Great set Derek.

Not a type of photography I've ever tried but you've certainly got it cracked. The camera seems to be doing a pretty good job in the right hands.

                      Thanks for sharing.

really? even with IS off the advantage is only marginal here surely?

What I was finding was you could take a high burst of shots, without hitting the buffer. If you reframed and shoot again the camera will carry on.
The E-5 will hit the buffer far sooner and on occasions will not be ready to shoot again

                            Great set of photos Derek,

It looks like the EM-1 with the 4/3 longer fast lenses is a perfect combo for this type of work.

It also looks like the weather was good and the action fast, thanks for sharing.

I see you had IS "Off", have you tried the setting that still provides IS but also works when panning?

Thanks, now I understand where you are coming from

I agree, the buffer must be significant on the M1 - I was shooting over 20 frames RAW last week on some guys surfing that storm with a slow (30mb/s) card; the indication of the buffer was just how long the camera remained writing after I stopped shooting!
