enabling the histogram viewfinder

How do you get the histogram to come up in the viewfinder? I tried the cogwheel,D1 info settings and put a check on the histogram picture , but that does not help it to come up. There are also checks on image only and overall. If I uncheck them it still does not come up. I am uncertain what I might have done wrong. I can't get it to come up in live view either. I Checked it on custom one which did not work, then also custom 2. What am I missing? Thank you

Have tried pressing info button several times whilst not in the menu to flick through what is displayed on both screens? You should eventually see the histogram.
