  • Testing Metabones & Canon

    This weekend I've a planned birding session, and I've rented a Canon 100-400mm mk2 and a metabones 0,71x adapter.

I want to test this combination with the new camera and see possibilities in real environment.

I'll let you know, not sure right now even if this combination may work...

    Interesting.

That lens with a Metabones IV or V is the recommended sports/birding solution for the Sony 6300/6500, so it'll be good to see how it goes with the Oly.

Compared with the Oly 300 the combination usefully adds zoom, but is 30% heavier and somewhat more expensive (although the Oly is now sometimes available more cheaply, while the Canon has been around longer so is sometimes available s/h).

On the Sony, the combination with the standard metabones is around 600mm at the long end.
    Regards,
    Mark

Bad luck! The metabones adapter I got was incompatible with em1.2, I will go to a shop next Monday to check if this is an specific problem of this adapter or it's a general problem of em1.2.

The issue is that a protuberance in the adapter containing a small adjustment dial is colliding with the 'pentaprism' of em1.2. No chance to test today, so just using my Oly 75-300mm

I haven't used the smart adapter with the length reduction. I have the m4/3 to canon adapter (not smart) which works well with the em1 .1 I have tried the canon 300 f4L lens also the sigma 500 prime F4.5 with my adapter and they work well! Also the meta/ canon 400f 5.6L would in my opinion be the way to go! Although I haven't tried this combo. Check out the kingfisher section on my website ( last 3 images)these were taken at a fair distance using the em1/
        sigma giving 1000mm.
        Kind regards Mike

That's odd, i'm sure the OMDs are listed as compatible on Metabones' site. Do you have the .64x instead?

          Just checked

Compatible with all MFT mount cameras, including GH4, OM-D, Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and JVC GY-LS300.

That page certainly lists the M1 mkii.

I've got one of those adapters I use with the OM Zuiko 200mm f4 and it went well on the M1 mki, so when I've got a moment I'll give it a go on the new body. As long as it fits, it's probably able to take advantage of the greater resolution, so the results might be quite good.

You may have the old one. It was redesigned to fit OMDs and eventually named 'Ultra'. I think you may have this now discontinued version --

                Re: Testing Metabones & Canon

I've checked the metabones part number and, as Bredman said, it's the old one (ending BM1) which is specifically listed as incompatible with OM-D. Tomorrow I'll go to another shop and will do a quick test with the new T series. I hope it will fit well.

Next time I'll check those details before...

                  Re: Testing Metabones & Canon

I've tested today the metabones correct version thanks to a local shop. I've tested it with two Canon lenses with dissimilar results.
                  24-70mm f4: aperture works, but autofocus doesn't.
300mm f4.0: both aperture and autofocus worked, but autofocus is pretty slow (1 sec aprox).

The most probable cause is camera battery power, not enough to move quickly this lens little monster. I was discussing the possibility of using an external power bank, and the micro USB connector available in the metabones to power both, metabones and lens, theoretically seems possible.

All that could result a bit cumbersome but I'll do the test anyway, as using a tripod it's possible to handle it.

So... reality as usual a bit less sexy than vendors hype, it works but... not with large lenses neither with all lenses.

Any other experience with Sigma/Canon/Nikon large zooms ?

                    Re: Testing Metabones & Canon

Metabones Speed Booster Ultra - Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds.

I bought one of these so I can fit my Canon EF lenses to my OMD mkII 600 F4 mkII 400 F4 mkII 100/400 mkII 24/105 and 85F 1.8
All fit and all AF but quite slow on the first 3 but the last 2 are acceptable IQ is great on all lenses CAF is a no it might get there in the end but most times it just racks back and forth .

In all cases AF speed is no way near the 300f4 pro, for me it will have limited use but does allow me to use my glass on my OMD mkII
The problem is how often am I going to be out with both kits ? so only if im next to the car and need extra reach will it be handy even then a second OMD mkII would be handy so the EF lens is set up for a perched bird .
                    Rob.

                      Re: Testing Metabones & Canon

What does the Metabones do to the focal length? Presumably reduces it, hence the "speed booster" bit. An unadjusted 600 f/4 would be quite something on m43!

                        Re: Testing Metabones & Canon

                        from my understanding 600 F4 on the OMD mkII is 600 f2.8 + about 1.6 crop so fov 960 f2.8 .

                          Eddit add the ef 1.4 1344mm f4 or the 2xtc 1920mm f5.6 .
                          Happy to be corrected

                            Hi Rob,

Have you tried to use an external battery (USB powerbank) to power both metabones and the canon lens? It uses the USB connector of metabones.

I was told that this may solve the issue of focus speed as it may be limited by the Oly battery capacity. Not very ergonomic, but mounted in a tripod it may work.

No not tried that, I don't have a power bank unless my vap smoke thing would work as it has a usb in it .
