  • Minor oddity with OM-1 custom modes

I took my camera out this morning, clicked on my normal C1 custom mode and had trouble with the auto-focus. Then I noticed I was on MF. Hmm I thought that's not normal it should be CAF. Then I looked at my other custom modes and they had all changed to MF. The only odd thing I have done with the camera lately is SAVE the custom modes using OM-workspace. The focus mode was the only thing that seemed to have changed - focus area and shooting type were all preserved. I checked I didn't have the lens switched to MF and was able to set all the modes back to CAF and save them.
An oddity! Fortunately I didn't miss any decent shots - unfortunately that was due to a lack of interesting subjects at the time.

    That’s odd. I don’t think I’ve had that.

I wonder if you restore your saved custom modes will it be MF or CAF. A shame there is nothing that lets us examine the saved settings files to see what settings they have.

Yes, it was a surprise and I am only suggesting something related to the settings save because, coincidentally, it was something unusual that I did with the camera. I wonder if I had my 12-100 on the camera at the time and had clicked the manual clutch. If that was the case I could forgive the software for saving the settings as MF, but I don't see that it is appropriate to update the in-camera settings. Maybe I sleep-walked in the middle of the night and updated the settings myself as a joke on my waking self.

Just a thought - were you using a lens with the MF clutch on it? Sometimes that can get moved without you realising it and then the camera will be stuck in MF mode.

It is one of he the classic "gotchas" - it has fooled lots of us (including me) over the years!

In this case no - I checked the lens when I noticed the focusing problems. I have been caught by the clutch and the MF switch on my other lenses before.

My guess, you have (or had) MF assigned to Fn2/Fn1 in Fn Mode2 when you saved the custom modes and flipped the Fn switch to that.

I don't think I did. To be honest I'm only guessing that the save had anything to do with it. I run on my custom modes 95% of the time do, i took a while to notice that even my S and A modes had gone back to MF. Checking out the fn2/fn1 switch - the custom mode settings seem the same in both. Also all I did was save the custom settings, I haven't restored them. I think it will remain a mystery.

Try resetting the camera (full-reset), and start all over. I had something similar happen with the M1.2.
