  • OM-1 firmware update problem or stupid me?

Apologies if this has already come up or been answered in another thread.

I've just been trying to update the firmware on my OM-1 using OM Workspace without success. I didn't do the 1.0 to 1.1 update recently and intended to upgrade to 1.2 (either in 1 or 2 steps) as I hadn't heard any negatives from other users.

I updated OM Workspace before starting and as I hadn't checked my old EM-1.3 recently successfully updated its' firmware to the current version 3.5 without any issues - mainly to re-familiarise myself with the process. Moving on to the OM-1, on connecting & selecting the Camera/Update I got the "Connecting to Camera" and "Connecting to Server" messages but when the equipment list came up it shows my OM-1 as vsn1.0 but with no other versions listed - with the message "You are already using the latest firmware. There is no need to update". At this point you're left me with no update options.

So, any ideas what's going on and what I can try to get round it. The only thing I can think is it doesn't like me using the EM-1.3's USB-C to USB-A cable although I'm sure I've read other users have used that successfully to update the OM-1 (my Windows 10 PC doesn't have any USB-C ports and in any case I also can't seem to find the supplied OM-1 USB-C to USB-C cable ... which is my own stupid fault!).

    Thanks for any thoughts ...

    Hi antpitta,
For the two updates, I have been using the EM-1.3's USB-C to USB-A for the simple reason that my computer and my laptop do not have a USB-C port. Strangely enough, the firmware update failed via my computer but seems to have been completed using the laptop.
Your missing OM-1 USB-C to USB-C cable might be attached to your OM-1 charger. Check it out.

Thanks for that. At least I've found the USB-A to USB-C cable - where you suggested. Talk about hidden in plain sight!!

Like you, both my laptop & PC are missing USB-C ports but I will give trying via the laptop a go when I get the chance later today. Next option is trying to persuade one of our daughters (with their rather more modern and powerful) gaming laptops to install Workspace & try with the "correct" cable. Just a bit frustrating having problems with simple support tasks when I've had no issues at all with the camera!

      Thanks again - Chris

Have to admit to using a USB to C connection cable that I bought off Amazon 3 years ago. And the update 1.1 to 1.2 went very smoothly.....

If the cable is of "decent" quality, and is in good condition, I am unsure where the problem is. The Olympus (?) system has always been a bit hit and miss IMHO...

Maybe an Interlink/wifi connection is not brilliant, maybe try at midnight if the lines are a bit clearer...Good Luck..

None too sure.....I had previously updated to v1.1 and have yet to update to v1.2

So for fear of stating the obvious:-

Have followed explicitly the instructions here

And though you said you have updated WS just which version number does WS say it is???

I hope you can resolve it soon

Maybe try re-booting your PC if you didn't do that between between updating the 1.3 & OM-1 ?

This over on DP Review may well help some out, it replicates the Lightsnowdev method. Caveat emptor: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66292782

I used the OI.Share iPhone app to update, and it went like a dream. All over in around 8’, and there’s a % progress bar that gives a lot of confidence that progress is actually happening (unlike the Workspace method, where you just get rotating icons on the rear screen regardless of what’s going on).
            Regards,

Just stating what may be obvious, but is the battery in the camera fully charged?

Done - finally Thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I thought I'd try completely removing OM Workspace from my PC & downloading/re-installing from scratch even though both claimed to be version 2.0.2

Despite apparently no differences this worked - showing the 1.2 release for the OM-1 which the "old" version didn't. Guess that's software for you! Even then part way through the actual update post-download the process failed with a "Failure to communicate with the camera (0x80070057)" message. Despite my worst fears that a failure part way through might have bricked the camera I started from the top and everything ran fine in around 10 minutes total elapsed. Huge sense of relief and as noted elsewhere just had to reset date, time & AF mode. At least I had the end of the cricket on the radio to take my mind off what was going on with my camera
