  • Focus clutch settings with 300mm f4 on OM-1

I believe there some inconstant behaviour on the OM-1 between the way the focus clutch and CAF-M menu settings work on different Pro lenses.

With my 40-150 f2.8 (and, I believe, with all other pro lenses with a physical clutch, and with all lenses on my E-M1iii) the two settings in the OM-1 AF menu 1 and 5 are independent (ie if you just set the clutch to inoperative you can still use CAF+MF). With the 300, however, setting the clutch to inoperative disables the manual adjustment with the focusing ring if you set CAF+MF on.

Can anyone else reproduce this, and is this a known issue? I’ve asked Dax (David) Smith.

This isn’t an issue for me since I almost never disable the clutch and I was just experimenting after someone on dpreview had reported something similar, but I know others do alter these settings often.

I have my focus clutch disabled on my 300 f4 because it is fairly slack and I kept accidentally moving it. I have set the lenses Lfn button on the lens to switch between auto and manual focus and this works perfectly. In the menu I have C-AF MF and AF+MF On.

Just checked lenses 8-25, 45-150, 300mm. Setting OM-1 menu AF, 6MF, MF Clutch to “Inoperative” then the Manual focus ring still operates.

I’ve now sat down with a cup of coffee, OM-1, E-M1iii and 4 Pro lenses and, after working systematically through all the combinations again it is now working properly throughout.
So, might have been a Senior Moment, passing cosmic ray or caffeine deficiency, or possibly the 300 wasn’t seated properly in the mount 🧐
Anyway, I’ll keep half an eye out for a recurrence.
        Thanks for the messages.
