  • Another OM-1 review article on AP - is the WoW justified..

This is by Andrew Fusek Peters who is an OM System ambassador (do we call them "OMBassadors"?), mainly looking at it from the wildlife point of view.

"OM SYSTEM OLYMPUS OM-1 – IS THE WOW JUSTIFIED?"

He seems to like it. He does make a couple of points about faster CFExpress card support and wider animal subject detection than bird / cat / dog.

He has some nice photos in the article but they seemed to have done something to degrade them slightly putting them on the website (unless this is deliberate to stop them getting ripped off..)

Yeah it’s the latest evolution of that but they’ve got faster transfer speeds than SD cards. I’m glad they stuck with SD on the OM-1, worse case scenario they might have hedged and put 2 different card slots in it like they did with the old E3.

Some super images here, the Stonechat shot stands out for me.

Everything seems good in this pretty positive with only minor criticisms. I can't believe he was so accomodating about his description of the dial operation. It's the one thing I really hate about the camera. I was slowly getting used to them but having used my old EM1 mk2 yesterday for some shots my annoyance with OMDS over the OM1 dials has been renewed. Plus having tried Mark J's EM1X out at Charlecote that annoyance is multiplied because all they had to do was use the same ruberised tactile dials as on the X and the feel would have been great. A definite own goal in my book OMDS.

Just checked out the write speed of CF Express cards which is upwards of around 1400Mb/s! The fastest SD cards (that I have found anyway) is 300Mb/s. Quite a difference!

            Fairly positive review.

Have to say the image quality on the site does not do the review any favours it's simply awful.
If they are worried about them being ripped off then put a watermark on them. I thought AP was supposed to be a photography site?

Yes I did a double take on the state of his photos when I read the article on the site and realised they must have messed them up. On his social media he says the article is being published in the actual magazine on June 7th so I will take a look at the magazine online when it comes out. I read AP online through the virtual library magazines iPad App I get access to from the county council included in our council tax - the image quality on that is usually pretty good.

Have to say I'm not a fan of "rubberising" anything on high value equipment. I've got several devices (including my X-rite iDisplay Pro colorimeter and a Pure Internet radio) that have that rubberised finish on some surfaces. Invariably, after a few years, the surface starts to get tacky and eventually becomes so sticky that it's unpleasant to touch. Fortunately, the rubber finish can often be wiped off (with some effort) using isopropyl alcohol.

I left a couple of rubberised flash memory sticks in a drawer for a number of years, just forgot about them. When I did discover them they were unusable sticky as heck.

I've had some rubberised items get sticky too but has anyone with an EM1X had the same issues? if not then whatever was used to make those dials should have been used on the OM1 the 1X is just miles better in this aspect so why on earth change the design!
