  • OM2 MK2 runs hotter than the OM1

    Hi all

I cannot recall if others have commented on this before..

I was setting up both the original OM1 and my MK2 the same (apart from based on the menu changes the AF ones are slightly different in the subject detection) and noticed that the Mk2 was noticeably warmer around the left side of the body and the screen which had flipped out.

I had not been shooting just doing the settings!

Has anyone else noticed the same?

    TIA

I noticed it on a few hours of shooting. It's around the base.

    All my garbage so far.

Are you using the same modes for each body? It seems reasonable that some of the additional computing-intensive modes of the Mark II would work the processors harder, generating more heat (and shortening battery life).

I surmise that though warmer it reaches a peak of temperature and sits at that level?

It's hot but not that hot till you can't touch.

The only time I had with an olympus camera shutting down due to heat was the Em1mk1 at a scorching Air Show. The camera just flash a warning and it shutdown.

I have noticed it runs quite hot at times but can’t remember if the Mk1 was the same.

Sometimes I’ve accidentally put it in a bag turned on and the shutter button must have been slightly pressed - heat insulating bag results in a surprisingly hot camera and almost dead battery. Something to watch out for as it can’t be good for the gear. I wish it would just eventually power off when this happens but the camera thinks I’m doing ProCap or something.

Done that once. It does get pretty hot and a dead battery.

No particular mode as I was not shooting.

I had both sitting on the table with screens flipped looking at my menu settings on 1 and transposing them on to 2

So, they were both turned on for the same amount of time with screens on equally so. The 2 screen was warmer to the touch and the body warmer to the LHS lower 'quarter' & base was where the heat was concentrated.

I had this same problem over the weekend when my EM1iii in my bag took 4000 shots as something was pressing against the shutter! I couldn’t figure out why my memory card was full.

Thinking about this, could it be a battery running hot? Have you tried swapping batteries?

Well it is the area where the battery is located. What I didn't do was pop the battery out to feel how hot it was? FWIW I have 5 batteries ranging in date order IIRC from 2021 to 2023.

In regard to how warm the body feels it is warmer than when I charged them in the dual external charger
