3 Legged Thing Releases New Single-Piece Dedicated L-bracket for OM System OM-1 and OM-1 Mk II



The award-winning British tripod maker has created a new version of its dedicated L-bracket for OM-1 cameras.

Following on from the popularity of its Ollie dedicated L-bracket for OM System’s OM-1 and OM-1 Mk II, 3 Legged Thing is excited to announce Ollie QD. This Arca-Swiss compatible, single-piece L-bracket perfectly fits the contours of both cameras. It gives users full access to battery doors and side ports.

Ollie QD’s vertical aspect has a cut-out that allows the camera’s rear screen to be opened and tilted. The L-bracket also features a notch in the vertical aspect to accommodate the camera’s strap lug.

Following feedback from some customers regarding the original Ollie L-bracket, small adjustments have been made to the base layout, enabling the camera to sit fully flush to the bottom of the L-bracket. 3 Legged Thing has also added a QD (quick detach) port into the base, that enables use with a variety of QD accessories, including straps.



“We had some really useful feedback from customers on our first Ollie L-bracket, so we’ve incorporated that into the new single-piece QD version,” said Stuart Boston, Chief Operating Officer, 3 Legged Thing. “We expect these additional features to be really popular with OM System users.”

Ollie QD also retains compatibility with the Peak Design Capture clip (v3) thanks to the robust glass-reinforced nylon adapter and pass-thru camera screw supplied in the box.

Ollie QD has some additional handy features in its base – a ¼”-20 screw thread for attachment of accessory arms, and a strap attachment slot at one end. It also features security pins on the bottom for an extra secure fit.



Made from beautifully anodised, aerospace-grade, magnesium alloy, Ollie QD is available in 3LT’s signature L-bracket colours; Copper (orange), and Darkness (matte black).

What's the most comparable competitor product?

It's just that I make and sell a product selling at an identical price. My product includes packaging and courier delivery (£15), materials (£20) and 4 hours labour (£???). In the scheme of things I am seriously undercharging but the public wouldn't pay more even though what I make has a serious safety role to play. Some things are sold at a price way over what they are worth.

The RRS plates are probably comparable, also in price! I've got just the base plate and I like the way it moulds to the complete base outline of the OM-1. I had to order from the US though as I couldn't find a UK outlet

It's nice to have another accessory option with 3LT but many of these things are expensive bits of metal!

First of all, my perception of Three Legged Thing is that it's a dependable company with innovative and high quality designs, and well-engineered. The company is UK-based, too.

I also think it's very positive that they have produced a custom-designed bracket for the OM-1 and OM-1ii.

As with all accessory products, there will be a range of prices, features, and quality, from different manufacturers.

I'm not a fan of 3LT, never liked the conceived/designed in the UK hype and Union Jack design always highly visible
Their products are made in the Far East and not really much different to all the other tripods from that region.
Only product I had of theirs wasn't much good, twist locks had a rubber covering which moved independently of the surface underneath.
This meant you never really knew if it was the lock or rubber covering turning when hoping to lock the leg in place.
Sorry to disagree, but their products seem rather expensive to me and personally prefer to look elswhere for something similar.

Somehow, That Benro Theta, cannot use that in the portrait position. It's not the bracket's problem but Benro Theta's design shortcomings.

Thanks Ian for putting this post/link up here: though even having seen the pictures I'm not sure what this thing does or why you would want one (maybe I'm not trying very hard) ... BUT it did show me where to find a lightweight and very affordable fluid tripod head - something I've been meaning to buy for a while.

With ever increasing age and gradually failing limbs I've been finding carrying my regular birding scope with an appropriate stable tripod too much if I'm also carrying camera equipment and out on a long "hike". My regular Swarowski ATX with the 95mm objective on a set of mid-range C/F Feisol legs and a proper Manfrotto fluid head is a fabulous combination for birding but weighs "a ton" so increasingly spends its' time upstairs overlooking the marshes. So, last year I found a much smaller and lighter second hand 65mm objective for the ATX and bought a cheap lightweight Sirui carbon fibre tripod reducing the total weight by more than 50% but the included head was a ball-type that is very difficult to use particularly if you want to scan across or up/down.

Enter the 3 Legged Thing and their new AirHed Trinity fluid head which looked to be just what I wanted. Taking advantage of their current sale and the extra 10% discount for signing up to their newsletter (and free DPD delivery) I ordered one yesterday lunchtime for the grand total of £64.79 and it duly arrived an hour ago (I certainly hadn't expected next day delivery!). Unpacked, inspected, installed and it looks/feels/works beautifully while only increasing the total weight of the new complete lightweight rig by just over 100gr.

I'll be giving it a proper session out in the wilds shortly but in the meantime I'm very happy with this chance discovery.

Wonder if that will be a good replacement for my Benro V1E ball head - I've never really got on with as it's a bit grippy...not found a good way to allow easy smooth motion with it.

I've had a quick play with it and am so far very happy with it but hopefully will get to try it out in the field in the next couple of days. I just could never really get on with the original ball-type head particularly using a 'scope as you regularly need to be able to pan smoothly to follow birds. They offer free returns so I felt it was a largely risk-free deal anyway.

Took my one out for a test run around Minsmere yesterday afternoon on top of my lightweight Sirui legs and was very impressed - so much better than the supplied ball-type head and plan to take it on our upcoming birding trips.

I just wish the new design would extend along the entire base of the camera, giving an extension of the grip. If this had been done I would've been prepared to fork out for it. I find it incredible that you can get a cheap n cheerful one for the E-M1iii, but not the OM-1. Frustrating!!
