I've just got 2 x 32Gb Tough UHSII SD cards for use in my OM-1. The cards work in camera and save images. However, when I plug the SD cards into the card slot on the back of my mac, neither card is recognised. My mac is a 2017 desktop imac, using Monterey 12.4. I can copy the images to the mac using the OM supplied cable via OM Workspace so that is an OK workaround in the short term. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you resolve it please?

Sony Tough SDHC UHS II SD cards - using with mac

Does the SD slot on the 2017 iMac support "UHS II" SD cards? (Older machines do not support the modern faster cards!)

From my very limited knowledge, the UHS 2 has a different connection array, so an older computer port won't cater for that. But I think they should still work off the existing connection array, but slower. I don't know what I am talking about, just putting 2 and 2 together...(5??)..:-)

MJ224 - I think having read a bit more deeply on Apple's website, it appears my 2017 mac will be compatible with their USB C to SD card reader which it says supports UHSII high speed cards. Looks like a trip to the local Apple store is called for! I suppose logic dictates that to accommodate the different connectors on the SD card, a different connector will be needed. I can transfer the images from the card whilst in the camera using the supplied connector cable - an OK get around, but I need to get that connector to enable the SD card to be plugged in and the images transferred within the computer.

My 2015 iMac supports the faster cards as it has the UHDii SD card slot on the back.
I have had it refuse to read cards after a software update - which often doesn’t include a hard restart (power off and on) so dependant on how you use yours a restart MAY sort you out (but then again may not 🤣🤣🤣 )Paul
Retired and loving it.

I’m pretty sure the UHS II std is backward compatible with the earlier spec. The extra pins are just that - extra. It should work fine, but obviously at a slower speed.

I agree with Paul. But, just to be sure, I bought one of these for use on my 2018 MacMini: https://www.lexar.com/product/lexar-...l-slot-reader/
It works beautifully on all the cards I have thrown at it..... SD (UHS-II, UHS-I) and CF for SanDisk and Lexar.

Non-UHS II readers (typically available on computers) should be able to read a UHS II card using just the standard pins but you won't get the high speed transfer. I've bought UHS II cards from Lexmark and Kingston that came with UHS II readers that you can plug into a USB3 connector and get the high speed.
There's another issue with SD cards in general in that there are several variants: SD (up to 2GB), SDHC (up to 32GB), SDXC (up to 2TB) and more recently SDUC (up to 128TB). The spec of your machine should tell you which card types are supported in the card reader. I've had to change a card reader in the past as it couldn't read SDXC cards but these were introduced in 2009 so your iMac should be OK.
The final wrinkle is the file system - smaller cards tend to use FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 while the larger cards often use exFAT. Did you format the card in camera? There can be occasional problems if the card is formatted on a computer and not the camera.Steve

Always format in camera. I had this problem, I formatted in a Panny and it created error on an Oly. So format in the camera of use.

Thank you everyone for responding. My mac isn't reading the cards at all! Indeed it isn't even recognising that there is a card in the reader slot on the back of the machine, so not even offering to transfer data at a slower speed.

blu-by-u Now I've got the usb-c to sd card reader, which works and transfers images quickly, I've found a solution. In time, I will investigate whether I can obtain a new driver, but not sure where to go for this for the mac. Thanks again for your help.

Hi
My 2012 Mac mini and 2017 MacBook Pro can both read 32GB UHS II sd cards, so I believe your system should be able to read these cards fine.
The issue I get is that the card is sometimes not shown in finder once card is inserted. No idea why. However if I start Capture One first and then insert card it always recognises the card. Not sure if that also works with OM Workspace.
When I've checked this before it seems the card is recognised by the OS but not mounted. When you get this issue you can go to applications/utilities/disk utility. This will show the disks attached to your system.
You should see something similar to above showing an OM SYSTEM SD/MMC Media with a mount point. If it is not mounted you can right click and use mount ( mine is already mounted and shows unmount option )

You're into debugging territory now.
1. Is the card reader working at all. Can you read other SD cards using it? If not, you have either a hardware problem with the reader or a driver issue.
2. On a Windows system, I'd be looking in Device Manager to see the status of the card reader - I think System Information lets you do this on a Mac. If it's not present, it may be something as simple as a loose connection or a straightforward hardware failure.
3. Again, under Windows, if it is present, I'd uninstall the reader and reinstall it. I don't think this is something that Apple expose to the typical user but there are 3rd-party tools that purport to do this. It's been a few years since I had to do anything in the guts of a Mac, but this is the type of tool I mean: https://macpaw.com/how-to/uninstall-drivers-mac (I've no idea whether this is any good, I'm afraid).
4. Another possibility is that there might be a firmware upgrade for the card reader. but I imagine Apple would do this automatically, if needed, as they control all of the hardware. On Windows, you'd have to go looking.
5. If still not working, I'd try an external reader and see if that can read the OM-1 cards. Assuming it can, this would prove that there is some kind of incompatibility between the OM-1 cards and the reader.

That suggests it's an incompatibility between the reader and the card, then, which is a bit odd given how long SDHC and SDXC have been around, but can happen. The only resolution in this case is updated driver and/or updated firmware, assuming that either is available and that there's not a hardware-specific compatibility issue. Without a solution along those lines, a new reader seems to be the only answer.
BTW - while checking some info on the Sony cards (which I also have for that distant day when my OM-1 turns up!), I found this page that says some of these cards have a problem and Sony has an active recall programme for them.
-
raichea thanks for pointing me to the recall page. I've looked and both my cards have the star marking in the corner and so aren't affected by this. I suspect I'll have to get the Apple usb-c card reader as that is stated as being able to read uhs II cards, and my mac is listed amongst those which it will work with. Unless anyone else had the same problem and found another solution .....
I'll try the cards in a windows pc, which I guess will determine if there's a fault with the cards being read by a card reader, in which case, it's back to LCE!

Problem solved! I purchased the Apple USB-C to SD card reader, and which works fine with my mac. Import of images now very quick using Sony Tough UHS-II card.Last edited by Chris-G; 23 June 2022, 04:29 PM.

Sadly not. I was in town on Monday for the first time for ages so dropped in to LCE to ask in person. They mentioned 'someone who ordered 28 Feb' had now had theirs
and mine was next on the list. They already have the charger on hold for me. The free batteries are still slightly delayed but he said it was a fairly short delay which suggested you should have had yours by now - have you?
I became aware of a FB group called 'Olympus and OM System Education Group' a couple of days ago and joined to see what was going on there. I was allowed in yesterday and immediately found a thread that asked, "Are there other people out there who pre-ordered the OM-1 from a dealer who are still waiting?". Alarmingly, one person there said (posted yesterday), "Wow I’m still waiting for my since feb Order from LCE Winchester uk" - I hope he's misremembered his order date (mine was 3 March).
-
Yes, raichea, I got my spare battery; it arrived at LCE just two days behind the arrival of the OM-1. I've seen the comments posted on the Facebook page you mention. From what I had been told by LCE Winchester, they originally took delivery of two OM-1s, then a long wait until mid-June for my OM-1. I was told for several months that I was next on their waiting list, so I'm not sure about that other comment about a Feb order for that store still outstanding. It does sound as though you shouldn't have much longer to wait. Fingers crossed ...
