Death of a CF card

I discovered on Friday that one of my Extreme III cards had stopped being recognised in the camera. No worries I thought as this had happened before when I'd plucked it from my Ubuntu laptop without ejecting it. Plugged it in last night expecting everything to be excellent.

Nope. Completely dead I was saved on Friday by the fact I had an XD card in which I got with the e600, bit of a saving grace for all the moaning people do about them. On close inspection one of the pin holes seems to have been enlarged, but none of the other cards are suffering the same fate.

Anyhow, has anyone else got experience of failure? Its just a shame beacuse the new Ultra cards which have the same write speed don't have anywhere near as quick a read speed.

I'm tempted to autopsy just because I can and I like doing that sort of thing!

You could try sealing it in clingfilm and putting it in the freezer overnight. Some one told me this and my card, an Extreme 2 is still working, don't know why, but not moaning

I've done this before with an SD card and unfortunately it killed it.

The freezer trick is something new I might try in the future. You've nothing to lose

My Extreme III was hot, I mean hot, when transferring pictures, no telling how hot in the camera. Contacted SanDisk about it, the card is bad, they have a limited lifetime warranty good for 10 years. So I can send it off and get a replacement for the cost of postage.
