  • Cuba 82 - Birds

I was not setup for wild bird photos as I only had the old 40-150r. There was plenty to see and I did take the Docter monocular (which is fantastic) and a pair of travel Bins for Mrs B. Got a couple of lucky shots, and the turkey buzzards are very big and plentiful. The 50-200 + converters would have been good, but the weight of the luggage was already maxed out with gifts.

    The Turkey Buzzards...

    La Sagra's Flycatcher.

    Northern Mockingbird.

    And Zapata Sparrow?

You got some excellent results with limited telephoto options.

The 4th and 5th (top post) are very nice (especially the finch). The 40-150 isn't really a lens for taking photos of birds, so the results are pretty good.

I think the Blackbird sized one is either a Cuban Pewee, or the larger La Sagra's Flycatcher; well according to my Cuban bird book anyway. The latter is reckoned to be about 8", the Pewee a bit smaller, and does seem to have "the yellowish lower mandible and white crescent behind the eye".
Could "Any Ideas " be an Acadian Flycatcher? and lastly could your "Finch" be a Phoebe?
Hopefully someone will be along who actually knows what they are talking about soon.
          Best Regards
          Bill

great set IMO! Love the space around the smaller birds; in many ways much better than the super high quality photos of a bird we expect to see.

I think due to the eye colour your right about the La Sagra's Flycatcher. I think the Other is a mockingbird. Not sure on the Phoebe though, that may be a Zapata Sparrow?
