  • Cuba 327 - New Ball

One of 20 I took out with me, they seem happy enough with it!

In case you're wondering I took them deflated! I also took a handy bicycle pump and some adapters.
I became quite adept at "performing" my "inflation routine" which usually drew an expectant crowd!

A new generation of FIFA players - where in spite of all good intentions, things are unlikely to change.

Seriously, looking at that picture brought back something that I have always wondered......why is soccer not a leading sport in Cuba? Cubans love sport, are a mixed Caribbean Latino people for the most part and are surrounded by soccer mad countries.....all ingredients for a soccer loving nation and yet they do not seem to be...at least not big time.

I did the same on mission trip to Malawi but unlike you I forgot the pump. Some of the local native craftsmen came to the rescue and manufactured one from bamboo and corks a very fine bamboo stem was the part pushed into the valve. All the local villages (23) got a ball there were some great matches and skill. Up until then balls were made from paper covered in a plastic bin bag tied in a ball shape with string.

Wonderful idea, just the look on their faces proves it.

And not a Nike flash in sight .
The picture tells the story, great when you have a bad memory.DW.

Being of American "history" the national Cuban (obsession) sport is baseball followed by handball and boxing. Football is very popular and many Cubans follow European teams, mainly due to the games being broadcast for free on stave TV (hacked from Sky etc!).

How long were you over there, and was it a holiday in the general sense, or more of a photographic mission?
(I bet someone's asked you this before, but with over 300 pages of previous postings forgive me if I don't search the entire series to uncover a previous response.)

It was just a general holiday, although my wife may not agree!
