  • Cuba 93 - Moorish Balcony Disaster

There is plenty of incredible architecture in Havana and the decay in the bright sun, like in Venice, gives it a magical quality. If there was no sun it would be a very different story I'm sure. This beautiful looking building was crumbling away and the top floor balcony had fallen away and taken the lower one with it. The crop shows the ad-hoc modification to provide an additional sleeping floor taking advantage of the high colonial ceilings.

Would you step onto a balcony in Havana? You'd need to be very brave! What a shame though to see such spectacular buildings crumbling away. The same was true in Russia, of course - and especially for churches. But they are restoring the buildings now, a mammoth task.

On or Under! Restoration is underway in Cuba too with UNESCO, but there is just so much to do.

The building looks lovely. Now relations with the US are normalising, perhaps effort to restore the place will speed up.
