  • Cuba 55 - Making a sale.

Street vendors are ever present as well as market traders that sell fruit and veg and pork and chicken. Their areas are usually painted Green and Yellow.

    A wiggle in the market.

    Trolley Dolly.

A CD shop (all ripped off western music, ripped on to CD with printed wallet covers - there is no copyright in Cuba!).

    Waiting for a sale.

Fascinating to see how people make a living in Cuba. Must admit I'm not hungry enough not to be wary of that meat in the butchers (think heat and flies) - it looks almost as dodgy as Tesco!

That asbestos sheet looks fine and should be the least of your worries (I work in a building clad in that stuff)

Shopping in Cuba must be like going back a century! Seeing the meat stall reminds of something my father said once: before the first world war, he was pretty disgusted seeing sides of lamb wrapped in stockinette stacked upright on Birmingham's New St Station waiting for the train....and dogs coming along and lifting their leg over the meat, as dogs do..... I bet Cuba's food hygiene isn't much better than that! Great for photographers, but....

And yes, the bananas look the worse for wear, too.

Some good images there as with the other sets.

The flies in 30+ degrees of heat were not really as bad as you might expect, something to do with the fumigation in the Old City I assume! The bananas above were Plantains, Cuban bananas are usually very small, even smaller than the smallest ones you see in the UK. You could easily eat half a dozen, which I frequently did as they had the most fantastic taste, probably because they were tree ripened unlike the ones we import here.

As Alf says asbestos cement is not particularly dangerous unless you make it into dust and breath it in. I think the sheets were there to protect from falling masonry from the crumbling structure above than anything else!

Whereupon the shattered asbestos and its dust showered the meat, no doubt...

That's fine, as long as it's well cooked and you don't sniff your meal before you eat it!

My favourite is the second to the last, for the sheer amount of colour (yet the intended subjects stick out). Did you illuminate them with flash?

No flash, it was the sun bouncing up off the floor, I think.

Fantastic set of images. I know Cuba is popular with photographers but you have just proved that there is always something new to photograph. I wonder how the changing political scene will affect things in the years to come.

Well you spurred me on....I'd been meaning to go to Cuba for years and have just booked a 5 day Havana photo tour in February (with a few days either side) in the hope of seeing it before it becomes a little bit more like everywhere else. Excited.
