  • Cuba 41 - Cuba Libro

Cuba Libro is a project I happened upon while researching Cuba before we travelled out. We wanted to take some stuff with us that would be useful for the locals and this project came up after reading a blog online. I maxed out the luggage with all sorts, but for them we took 20 paperback books (3.5kg!) and 64gb of PDF files (7g on usb sticks!).

This is what they say about themselves....

"Cuba Libro is the island's first English-language bookstore and cafe. We opened in August 2013 on a beautiful, verdant corner in the exciting Vedado district in Havana. This is not just another run-of-the-mill/run-to-the-bank private business in Cuba. We operate on ethically and socially responsible principles with a vision of strengthening the local community and reinforcing the cultural inroads made in the last 50 years. Stop by to see how we roll!"
Cuba Libro, Havana. 4,245 likes · 122 talking about this. Coolest place under the Cuban sun. Great books in English, healthy drinks & snacks, 100% Cuban coffee

They were very grateful and the coffee was also very good!

Looking quite western, one of the founders is from the USA.

Very thoughtful of you to donate books to the project and the 2nd shot with the hammock is no less than masterful, Andrew.

Well done! Providing support direct to where you want it to go, must be very rewarding.

Getting great images is a reward in itself.

Now that looks like a very different side of Cuba! I like the treadle sewing machine table. And the photo of the skulls. A quirky place, methinks, well photographed!

Like with most regimes what you can and can't read is strictly controlled. Getting English language books is also very difficult, but very useful for locals wanting to learn English, which is obviously essential for the growing tourist trade. Hopefully with the embargo being close to being lifted more will become available. A paperback book in English, even secondhand, can cost over 1 month's wages. These guys lend out books for very little money as well as other educational activities.

Once again, a great set. I love the colourful, wide interior shots.
