  • Cuba 35 - Ballet

Ballet is a big deal in Cuba and they take it very seriously. While the Grand Theatre in Central Havana is under restoration the Ballet Nacional de Cuba are based at the National Theatre on the north west edge of the Plaza de la Revolucion. Founded by the Cuban prima ballerina assoluta, Alicia Alonso in 1948, it has become recognised as one of the world's leading ballet companies. We were fortunate to be in Havana to coincide with a performance by the company. Tickets for locals are $1 and $25 for tourists, but worth every cent. For some reason we were allocated seats in the front row with all the invited dignitaries!

Work on the Theatre building started in 1951 but it was not opened until 1979.

There was no photography during the performance, but I snapped a couple of shots during the curtain calls with very high ISO and the 45 at 1.8, no flash.

The theatre, what a contrast to your previous posts. I'd hire you as a photo journalist any day, Andrew! You have been wide awake from the time you sat down and throughout the performance - the front row lap top shot was gutsy!

$25 for the ballet - they obviously haven't embraced capitalism yet!

Another great set, and so different to the others you've posted.

Loved this set. Front row seats! You must have looked like dignitaries!
Certainly a contrast to your other photos and nice to know that the arts are surviving well in that country.

Classic case of public affluence and private squalor.

That building looks so 1951! Some brilliant shots there.

Another excellent set. Looks a brilliant place were it not for long haul flights it'd be on our hit list.

I particularly like the last two shots, I've used the 45 1.8 and high ISO at a concert in exactly the same circumstances, it's worked well for you here.

Interesting set of images, Cuba is a fascinating place to visit, very friendly people and photo opportunities to be had. Your complete series has depicted this extremely well.
