Schools and Health services are free at the point of delivery in Cuba too (they do pay tax). School dinners being delivered on a trolley, of sorts. These trolleys appear all over Havana, a basic frame with old bearings for wheels, a challenge when negotiating the cobbled streets. School children all wear a uniform, even through secondary school. University students completing degrees have to work a government job for 2 years at the $20 a month rate.

Re: Cuba 7
The first is a great shot, with excellent composition and showing an unusual side of life in Cuba - it's not all rusting cars and fading colonial buildings!
Two years working for low pay in a government job seems a great alternative to the crippling tuition fees that we have.

Q/- How soon will this idea in the one-upmanship future policy promises will this 'common sense solution' to inherant student debt, make it into a party manifesto?Originally posted by Zuiko View Post... Re: Cuba 7
I was in France over the weekend. They still have free university-level education there and talking to family members, they are all completely baffled by the idea of paying around €50k for three years' study. I remember we used to think that when we looked at the US. We can all blame Tony Blair's "Education, Education, Education" focus for the mess we're in.

Free also in Germany AFAIK. Nearer to home, the same applies yet gets scorned at.
A once-upon-a-time, a work-round to fees was to get an Armed Forces Scholarship.
If it still applies, the downside was/is, once you'd done the crime, you had to do the time... in uniform. Of course there is another UK free route to Uni education... go to jail. It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.
