Common Green Grasshopper Omocestus viridulus
This is one of what I believe to be three species I photographed recently at Decoy Heath Reserve on the open heathland. There are many forms and variants within each of the species and I am a novice at identifying them so I will willing take corrections. The stereos are crosseye. Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f10, hand-held. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread
Field Grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus
In a different genus from that of the Common Green Grasshopper, I had not photographed this before. I think the variant and the nymph are of this species but am willing to be corrected. The hairy chest is diagnostic. Again, these are from the open heathland at Decoy Heath Reserve. Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, first two f7.1, then f11, f9 and f10, hand-held. The stereos are crosseye. Black-tailed Skimmer Male At Rest
This is the same male of which I recently posted images showing mating. Males of this species like to rest on the ground. The pond water had retreated from the normal edge during a drought. This untidy background is partly of dried out detritus from under the water. This was where the dragon alighted on several occasions, and nowhere else, so I had no choice. The stereo is crosseye. Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm 1/400 at f9, ISO 250, hand held. Harold ![]() ![]()

Thanks, Mark.
Useful here for lifting the dragon out of the background debris. Harold

Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus
In the same genus as the field grasshopper, the species has numerous colour forms. I found these on the dry, open area of Decoy Heath on 11 July. Based on wing length, I believe these are males. Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f8, f10 or f11, hand-held. The stereos are crosseye. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread
The little beast was very patient. When I see them, they rarely stay put for a photo session...……..Nice set Harold...

Quote:
As with any insects, minimising movement near them often gets results. Moving around on your knees, where you have seem hopper activity, and not moving far works well. One you are in close and have it framed, shooting further frames seems not to faze them. Harold

Brachytperous Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus
Also from Decoy Heath, these are short-winged individuals. Maybe they are females, perhaps some are immature males. Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f8, f10 or f11, hand-held. The stereos are crosseye. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
