    You sound more interested in the LR than the safari! Having at various times visited Tsavo (E&W), Amboseli, Nairobi, Mara, Hell's Gate, Naivasha, Nakuru, Baringo and the other Rift Valley lakes I can fully recommend Kenya.

      Sorry - yes I am an LR nut and I apologise for distracting things

      I am actually also very interested in the idea of visiting South Africa and also Uganda (where my grandparents lived for 10 years and I visited aged 2). It has only been the cost that has held us back and it's really useful to read all these threads on doing it yourself

        Cost can certainly be an issue if you go for one of the upmarket luxury options and I doubt you can go anywhere for less than we manage in the Kruger. You might save a little by using a tent but not much although you can certainly save by self catering, which many locals do. A number of upmarket holidays described as being in the Kruger are actually in one of the private reserves to the west of the National Park.
