  • How do we download our own images?

A recent announcement stated that the Gallery is going to be shutdown.

How do we download our images before they're lost?

I'm thinking about that - it may have to be one by one. In which case I will turn off the copy protection.

Hopefully I can work out a more suitable process...

Thanks Ian and Jim for asking what I was about to ask
Hope it's not one by one though!

Re: How do we download our own images?

So far, I have not found a way for bulk downloading photos from the gallery.

In the mean time, I have disabled right-click copy protection so that it is much easier to download your photos.

The copy protection was only meant to dissuade casual theft and it has protected to this degree for now, so please forgive the need to give up this protection for now. It's more important for anyone who needs to save their own pictures at this stage.

The gallery was never meant to be a primary archive, of course. And gallery images that have been shared to forum posts will remain on the forum, anyway.

If I get a lot of feedback that more time is needed, then I will delay the cut-off point, which stands at the end of next week (end of the first full week of December), although this will also delay the introduction of the new forum

Any questions - please let me know.

        Thanks,

Re: How do we download our own images?

If the images will still be there in the posts and they can still be downloaded once the change has taken place then what's the problem?

As Ian says the forum was never meant to be for primary storage.

If we start delaying the change waiting for everyone to say go we could be here next year or even longer still waiting for the upgrade. Don't the benefits of the new forum outweigh the downside of things changing a little?

            Ian
Given the URL of photos in the Gallery is used when posting to a forum thread, if a photo is deleted from the Gallery is it not also deleted from the forum post ?

I just tried the above and the photo vanished from my post. On the other hand, I may have misunderstood your comment, and you may be referring to a different process provided within the update

As the majority of photos have to be resized etc. before uploading to the Gallery, I would have thought most members would keep a copy of the original on their own hard drives or other storage facility anyway. If so, surely this reduces the need for anyone to download hundreds of Gallery photos before the forthcoming update.

IMHO, the priority should be to get the update completed ASAP which hopefully will enable the forum to progress, attract new members and possibly some form of revenue from sponsors etc.

Re: How do we download our own images?

The evidence is that in my two other sites where we have had to close the gallery, gallery photos remain in forum posts.

The gallery is not physically removed, but the server OS upgrade required to enable the new forum to operate prevents the core gallery functions from working. Photos are not deleted as part of the upgrade process.

Re: How do we download our own images?

So presumably if I took all my images out of the gallery then the respective forum posts would lose them as well?
I suspect I just dont know enough about the update then. Sorry if you've explained it before Ian and I'm a bit slow but when you have updated everything will the old posts still be there but in the new format? I was assuming that it would be a new forum and we'd just start again?
I used to be a member of the excellent old DC Resource forum and when Jeff Keller closed it he left everything there unchanged but frozen in time so that anyone could use it as an archive. Is that the sort of thing you will do?

Removal (deletion from the gallery) will remove them from both the gallery and the forum, yes. This is not advised!

My advice is, if you need to preserve some of your gallery images if you don't have the originals any more is to right-click >> download image, which is possible since last night.

Thanks Ian. I went through mine this morning & saved a copy (noticing you had lifted the protection) of the ones I wanted to have available for easy access & others to remind me when I took them so the original can be located. The gear ones like a modified lens hood is now also on Flickr (although set as private but can still can be shared).

One member using an iPad asked how to download images - you long-press the image and a menu with options will appear. It's usually the same with other device browsers, including Android devices.

Re: How do we download our own images?

After sending out the newsletter last week I had no desperate requests to delay the closure of the gallery so photos could be downloaded so, as scheduled, the upgrade will go ahead on Friday and this will see the closure of the gallery.

Ad it's worth repeating; your photos from the gallery that have been shared to the forum will stay visible in the forum.

The forum will be closed at 11:30 AM on Friday. It could remain close for 2-3 hours while the new forum is installed, the many reconfigurations required implemented and some testing done.

Once the forum is re-opened it should be fully functional, but some tweaking will happen on and off over the next few days. I don't envisage long outages for maintenance beyond the actual installation.
