  • Forum upgrade and closure of the gallery (ONE MORE DAY LEFT)

After spending several months upgrading similar installations on fourthirds-user.com and dpnow.com, I feel I'm ready to tackle the E-Group at last. I have learned a lot and should be able to use that knowledge to upgrade this site with the minimum possible down-time.

Therefore I have set aside the first week of December to carry out this work.

As previously mentioned, the upgrade will bring quite a few benefits - a cleaner and more modern design, smart compatibility with smartphone and tablet devices, it will mean we can upgrade the server software to improve security, reliability and performance (the existing forum and gallery software aren't compatible with the most up to date server software), you won't need to re-size your photos before uploading them to forum posts, and there is more.

However, we will need to retire the gallery as it is no longer being supported, let alone developed. Fortunately, gallery photos that have been shared to the forum will not disappear from forum posts. However, once the forum is upgraded the gallery itself will disappear as it simply won't work any more.

If, in the unlikely scenario, you only have copies of cherished images in the gallery, please download them as soon as possible. If you need assistance in doing this, please get in touch.

The upgraded forum has photo album facilities but, unlike the gallery, it won't be centralised. Instead it will centre around individual member profiles.

Image posting to forum posts is much better because you won't need to resize your images before uploading them. Once an image has been uploaded you are offered a choice of sizes to show them in your post.

Forum boards will also summarise the most recent images posted to that board via a thumbnail gallery that you can click through to a gallery-style light box of the images displayed in a larger size.

One problem with the new forum that I have been lobbying the developers to fix is the failure of uploaded image to retain the camera EXIF metadata. Quite by surprise they delivered in the latest update released a few weeks ago.

There is a lot more detail to reveal but I'll leave it there for now.

But if you have any questions about the planned changes I will, of course, do my very best to answer them.

    Ian

I'm glad there is some photo management aspect in the upgrade I can't be bothered with hosting them elsewhere and then linking them in .. bring it on

Looking forward to the update with a bit of trepidation I must say but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I would be interested to know how to download my gallery images into a specific folder to keep on my own hard drive. I'm sure I will have most of them somewhere but finding them all to be sure would be rather time consuming. Having the gallery was actually quite a useful resource. If I could download them all to a personal folder easily then I'd be able to keep them as a nice summary selection of my images.

Will the new software do 'anything' to uploaded images?
I started linking to Flickr instead of using the gallery here as I found I was losing sharpness for some reason when uploading directly to this site!

If the uploaded image is larger than 1600x1600 it will be resized to fit and the original will be discarded.

Unlike Google we don't have infinite disk space on the server

Exif data, if present, will be preserved (JPG files).

There are limits to the capabilities of the resize algorithm and so it may well be that you will prefer to continue either uploading hand-crafted images that won't be changed or deep link from other sites like Flickr.

                It's primarily for convenience.

You can see how it works here:

                https://fourthirds-user.com/forum/fo...fore-uploading

Obviously, you can't see the original for comparison, but it's not too bad.

Thanks Ian, I'd resize smaller that 1600 on the long end anyway so all good.

Thanks Ian, we are going to have bite the bullet for several days I guess. We still need a recognisable forum from this one. Actually, other than the odd timeouts, I quite like this format...But No doubt we will soon get used to the new format.

How long do you think the changeover will take? I have the Challenge to sort, and I am holiday for Christmas (In Hawaii again..Someone has to do it..:-))

                      Go for it....

Forum Timeout problems yet again all morning today. Also reported the other day by members. Will the forthcoming update resolve this annoying issue once and for all or will it still be just as bad as previously ?

No, this is not related to the upgrade.

It's actually a web spider problem - specifically Amazon this morning. We had a similar issue a few months back, fixed it and now it's back. It's incredibly frustrating!

So you might not like my 460Mb Tiffs.

I look forward to the new site as its about time I stuck a few picies on to receive criticism.

                              JPGs only, please

Actually files over a certain 'weight' will generate an error anyway. Low compression 50 megapixel JPGs should be OK, just.
