Hi Kieth, out of interest what exposre setting did you use, was it 'as set by the camera', or did you apply compensation? In the 1st I'd prefer to see greater contrast between the subject and the similar tone of the walls. It's slightly too late when the shot has been taken, unless you can fiddle with the colour to B/W conversion.
It's a personal thing, but in street I prefer to see a less distracting background. Try breaking the pattern in a Damien Demoulder sort of way.

Both were as metered (bear in mind, I hadn't had the camera long then, and was still getting used to it); but I couldn't do anything much about the backgrounds. You may notice that the guy with the chips was looking at me. He was a bit "put off" by my grabbing the shot (I actually got two or three, this was the best of him), and rapidly turned away (the $%^&&!) so I didn't get another chance. He was only about 3 or 4 feet in front of the window. This is the problem with street shots, isn't it; you get one chance only.
These were at our steampunk fair. Lots of people about, and stalls in the way. I guess you noticed that "Mr Chips" was in both shots. He wandered around with his camera at the ready, but I didn't see him take one shot!
However, I got it wrong - the only lenses I had with me were the 75-300 and the 12-50, the latter not ideal, with its small aperture at longer lengths; I think Mr Chips was taken with the 75-300. The light wasn't good enough, and now I would use the 25/1.8 or 45/1.8.
Yes Keith, my preference is for 25mm or slightly wider, and just get closer; engage with your subjects, try to get a reaction, if you can, smile and move on.

I just checked the EXIF; it was the 45, not the 75-300. Memory isn't as good as it once was! Exposure was 250 at 2.8, ISO 1250 for Mr Chips. The other one, exposure was 500 at f4, same ISO. PSP says "Exposure bias 0.3 EV....."
Mr Chips would probably have been better shot with the 75-300.

Me! He was really scowling at me and the lady I was talking to as I grabbed the shot of him. Then he turned round and walked off. As I said...he didn't take a single shot all the time I could see him - and he popped up everywhere I went. He didn't say a word to anyone, either. Very strange guy. When I saw him stuffing his face with the chips, I just had to get a shot of him! For a time, he was using his camera to rest the chip paper on.......
