  • Millie & Chelsea: more from my 'massive make-up' shoot last night. Very pretty.

    Hi All

Great fun last night at my 'massive make-up' shoot... here's a few more.

I have already posted one shot of Heather from the shoot, here's another of a young girl who was doing her 1st time modeling, Millie.

    Very pretty...

Millie as herself... with 100's & 1000's sweets on her lips

... and this is Chelsea. Chelsea has done modeling before, and was extremely photogenic.

I think the last one (of Chelsea) works very well, the second one (of Millie) is to my eyes less successful - I wonder if the background is the right one for such a static pose. The first I keep going back to (OK I like looking at pretty girls) something tells me it could be better, but I'm not sure what.

    Nice set

      Honesty is a virtue!

I think they look pretty too. They are nice photos with pleasing composition & poses by lovely model girls John, but maybe the second one has a bit too much back lighting considering the white dress & white face makeup. Is that it Nick?

Well I'll add to my temporary and latterly acquired reputation for honesty by saying that I don't know, but I think that something could be done to increase the contrast/prescence.

Thanks Nick and Ross, appreciate the feedback.

I think you are right about the 2nd one, though I did intend to go a little hi-key... but not too much. I guess a darker background might have complimented the model a little more perhaps. I did ensure that there was minimal 'spill' light from the backdrop lights back onto the model, but it still looks a little 'washed' I guess.

Still very much learning here... appreciate the great feedback though folks, thanks.

I'm going to report you to the unfair competition comission... all these loveley young ladies (in this and your last thread) and you haven't even needed to leave home.. they come to you ...

How are us "non parents" going to compete

I know this is FF not LFP, but being "honest" as that seems to be the theme I agree with the comments above and note that the reflection spot in her eyes looks ring chapes. I suspect this is a brolly reflector, but it's very slightly distracting in an otherwise really nice picture

Re: Millie & Chelsea: more from my 'massive make-up' shoot last night. Very pretty.

Hi John, no1 is a cracker, there appears to a rapport between the subject and the camera/photographer and by proxy between the viewer and the subject which comes across very strongly and gives the portrait impact and takes it beyond being just a likeness to something else.

No2 & 3 are nice but of course once you view the first one the other two seem mediocre in comparison, there not of course.

I agree with the rest about the background in no2 not being in keeping or suiting the theme.

I hope you do not mind but i could not resist a quick play around in Elements 9 with it and swapped the background and changed the colout temp of the subject to suit.

You will have to excuse the roughness of it as it was quick.

              Regards Paul.

Have to say folks, that I am really appreciating the honest critique being posted here and thank you all for this.

I really am still learning portrait photography, and am finding that this is something I didn't think I'd enjoy so much as I am.

Very good portraits and a refreshing change in style / makeup, how long did they last before licking their lips

Regarding No 2, I've got an alternative view. John, you say you intended it to be a little hi-key. Maybe that's the problem, it falls between two stools. Why not give it a try as a full blown hi-key, I think it might just suit the subject and background? A gentle hint of diffusion may help the mood, too!

I also have another suggestion (after sleeping on it), that you could have used a coloured gel on the flash behind her to give a contrast of colours, but then again, it depends on the look you were after.

I just noticed another tiny detail in the first lovely shot (my favourite). As a father of 3 girls (with them asking if they look OK before they go out), I think part of the makeup could have been even more effective if the burgundy stars on her finger nails were on top of pink nail polish (as a base for each finger) to match her pink lip stick. It would have taken longer with the makeup, but every little detail that can be thought of can add to that final perfect shot & I think it would have added to this too.

I love your creative shots & appreciate you sharing them.

                      Thanks,
