Warning to Nvidia graphics users on Windows 10!

Following a nastyexperience with the latest "Feature Upgrade" to Windows 10, version 2004, if your PC uses Nvidia graphics there is a known issue with older drivers. From the release notes:

Nvidia and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues with certain versions of Nvidia display adapter drivers and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Windows 10 devices with affected Nvidia display driver versions might receive a stop error with a blue screen or other issues during or after installing the update to Windows 10, version 2004. The affected drivers are any version lower than 358.00.

Before you let the update install check that you have the latest driver for your video card. Mine was well out of date! The latest one for the GeForce GT 710 is dated 24 June 2020. I have installed it but am not going to try the update again until it is demanded by the system! There is a list of known issues with v2004 as long as your arm so worth checking this:

I found this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HryjIsPx6Zg which explains how to delay for a few days or even a year both the Patch Tuesday security releases and the main Windows updates like this latest one to v 2004.
Using this method, I have delayed the security updates by 7 days and the Main Win updates by 180 days. By then all problems should have been found and sorted.
Well worth watching.

Very good video, thanks Keith. He does go at a rather supersonic speed though! This machine is running 10 Pro so I'll do what he suggests when I have a chance to slow him down and concentrate .

Cheers for that Otto, you prompted me to update my graphics driver on the main PC.
Different NVidia card to yours, but still needed doing.
The PC now seems to run at least three times the speed; at least as far as browser refreshes go, so worth doing anyway.
Hopefully it will now stop Opera crashing as well.

Thanks for the heads..........................v358 is now very old.

I updated mine a short while ago to current v451.48 my card is the GTX1050Ti

FWIW many programs especially Topaz AI ones can be a little fickle and need the most current driver most/all of the time.

The annoying thing that W10 at one time (Jan 2020) installed nVidia v432.00 and I had just went ahead and got the official ones here https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/drivers/

My PC is telling me it is not yet v2004 ready but I have not heard of many (just a few???) who have accepted the update and had any issues.

The way the update is delivered AFAIK can depend on whether you run the Pro or Home version of W10 i.e. for home users it is pushed if not willingly installed within some days after being made available 🙃

So far this machine has attempted to install v2004 Pro but failed, probably due to the graphics driver. The little "net top" downstairs has succeeded but it took two days to update its Home edition, and my most recent and most powerful machine (also Home) that I use for photo work says it's not ready. I think I'll try and wait until the bugs are ironed out before trying again!

I have 3 machines - all home - all of which I updated by running the "settings" app and forcing a check. It's a huge upgrade so it does take time - I'm very impressed with the new Edge browser.

I was very lucky that the update on this machine happened last week - I installed an Nvidia GT710 on Monday and it worked without a hitch using the drivers W10 got from Windows Update automagically.
I've since updated to the latest drivers from Nvidia direct with no ill effects.
Just lucky I guess?

As I mentioned in my original post (#2), everyone can have total control of all updates by just following the instructions in the linked video. It's really easy to do and you can delay both critical (patch Tuesday) and main Windows updates for as long or as little as you want.
(yes, he does go rather fast but I watched it all the way through then found the section pertinent to my version of Win 10 and slowly worked my way through it.)

I just used Driver Booster Free and my DxO Optics Pro 9 now launches quicker.

Outlook may also launch a second or two faster.

Also (coincidence?) a link in an email to a Foto Fair post worked immediately. Before the update I was refused permission via the link but was OK via my main Foto Fair shortcut.

I've only been using my new Windows 10 laptop less than two weeks now, so updates have occurred & when checking it says all is up to date, although saying 2004 is on the way when ready.
I have the NVIDIA GeForce MX130 in this laptop (comes with it in this version of HP Probook 450 G7). I haven't checked if drivers are up to date yet though. If I go to look at the NVIDIA control panel it asks me to accept etc. Do I need to do that & should I? Sorry, I'm feeling fairly ignorant with this OS & it's quirks (not that I knew a great deal with windows 7 either).
