  • Poor TV Reception

    Has anyone else experienced poor digital TV reception recently, with the picture pixelating and breaking up and the sound "popping?"

    From experience, if you are receiving via a satellite dish it could indicate a replacement is needed.

      Not here in Dorset. Saying that I can’t remember the last time I watched terrestrial TV (Freeview) but have recently tuned in a new TV, so it was OK then. Watch Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

        If you are talking about Freeview we have had poor reception just recently in the bad weather. I can only think that the millions of fine rain drops between us and the transmitter somehow scatters the radio energy resulting in poor reception.

        We can actually see the transmitter mast (Pontop Pike) from our bedroom window on a clear night, (it is about ten miles away) so there is nothing else getting in the way.

        High atmospheric pressure can also affect radio signals in the UHF spectrum.

          Do you have more that one TV? If so presumably they are all the same.

          Have you checked the signal quality in the set-up menu?

          Generally speaking, two signal parameters are provided, gain and quality.

          If gain is maximum (eg 100%) but quality is low-ish, this can indicate the gain is too high, either by use of a high gain aerial (generally no longer required since the analogue transmitters were turned off ) or use of a signal booster turned up too high. I had similar problems with a high gain aerial. I used a passive splitter (Y shaped: signal in, with two outputs) and it sorted the problem by reducing the signal gain roughly by 50%.

              It could be something as simple as the aerial having moved slightly. Television signals and aerials are highly directional and if a big bird lands on them they can be put out of alignment.

              The cable and terminals at the aerial end can also become corroded.

                We used to get a lot of pixelation from Freeview normal definition terrestrial so we switched the Freeview HD terrestrial. We now are getting frequent momentary pixelation. All this is via Virgin Media cable.

                You may need to get your signal attenuated.

                  We have VM cable. Very, very rarely do we get pixelation, but now we occasionally get the sound distorting for a few seconds making a curious gurgling sound. I've thought it was the set - perhaps a dodgy contact, and given it a thump in time honoured fashion!

                        Thanks for all your replies guys, giving plenty of food for thought. I'm getting maximum signal strength so I think I'll start with Steve's (Ricoh) suggestion of trying a signal splitter.
