  • The Age Thing...

Looking over the content of the board today, and seeing Brian's post about not having any more Olympus gear as he has health problems...it got me thinking about the age span on this site....most (and that's a very loose term) seem to be leaning towards retirement age, some around the nifty fifties, and some still able to look upstairs without thinking how long is this going to take me so it would be interesting to find out our youngest forum member and our oldest...no prizes of course, but an interesting point.

Also are the younger members actually interested in a site like this....or is it all selfies and phone pics ??

    Cheers

Oh BTW I hope I haven't offended anyone about the 'age' thing, either admitting your age on here or the assumption everyone is quite old..

    Cheers

A very interesting question. I won't win any prizes at either end of the spectrum, being 63 and retired.

        Re: The Age Thing...

I think a lot of members on this site were Olympus OM users in a former life (me included) and that tends to make them of a certain vintage. To many younger photographers, the name Olympus probably didn't mean a lot before the advent of micro four thirds.

Just for the record, I am 65 and certainly the weight issue is making itself felt these days. I live in a bungalow though, so I don't have to contemplate climbing stairs.

Well i'm 63,so that puts me with Stephen, but i'm not yet retired, still working and hopefully remaining fairly fit, don't plan to give up completely either at 65, the old saying .....if you don't use it you lose it...but who can tell what the future holds...

I'm an Olympus user from the eighties...so Ron i'm with you..

Well I have to admit to being up there in the "nifty fifties", although in my head, I'm still about 27...

                    Re: The Age Thing...

I'm 57, still fairly fit and active and recently retired of my own making.

I'm fairly new to photography having started with an E500 circa 8 years ago and I'm keen to learn.

I chose to retire, having worked since the age of 15 I decided I'd like to do something other than work before I was too old to do so, we also don't know what's around the corner.

Sadly, my successor whom I'd worked with for several years and is some 10 years younger than me has recently been diagnosed with two forms of primary cancer, this has convinced me that I made the right decision when I chose to retire.

I'm hoping my friend makes a full recovery and will eventually be able to return to work, if they choose to do so.

                        Re: The Age Thing...

Feeling a very youthful 36 so either letting the side down or just the average. Certainly not as fit as I ought to be but something I trying do something about.

I've always had the impression that the majority of members, or perhaps more accurately, the majority of those who post regularly are retired or semi-retired. Mainly because of the amount of time many dedicated not just to photography but also to this site. I can only scrape together one or two visits a week.

Ron's comment is interesting as the first slr I used was my father's OM-10 so Oly got me hooked early.

70 in a few months! Don't feel it though (much!) Still doing daft things, Hiking 10 to 15 miles regularly, CG bowls in the summer, still love driving (done it most of my life professionally) I only gave up climbing/abseiling/ caving/potholing/MTBing about 4 years ago!
One lad I go walking with is approaching 76, to see him turn up on his 1949 AJS 500 is something else!
It's often said photographs don't lie, well mine do!
