  • Compact camera that shoots RAW?

    Hi all,

Anyone have any recommendations for a good compact camera that can shoot RAW?

I currently have an E-510, but don't always take it out walking or cycling due to size. And they say that the best camera, is the one you have with you!!
Popped into John Lewis and had a play with an EPL-1 - still a bit too big for my liking.
The guy serving then got out a Canon S95. Seemed like a nice bit of kit. So now thinking about a RAW compact.......

    Cheers,

    Pete.

The current pick of the top compacts is probably the Oly ZX-1 http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/29...xz-1_24017.htm which shoots RAW and Jpeg.
Alternatively I would also recommend you take a look at the Panasonic LX-3 and 5 which use essentially the same sensor and again both shoot RAW as well as Jpeg.

There was a thread on this subject recently, take a look here http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthre...ight=Panasonic

I have an S95, you really can put it in your trouser pocket and forget it is there. I wrote a few notes about it here.

Update - Lightroom 3 and ACR now support RAW files.

I haven't looked into this, but I immediately thought when reading your comment about the same sensor being used by Panasonic and Olympus in their respective compacts - that this was unlikely. The LXs use a 16:9 aspect ratio CCD which is pretty much unique to Panasonic. I will check, but I thought the XZ-1 uses a conventional 4:3 aspect ratio CCD.

PS and it's 'XZ-1' not ZX-1 - you might get Sir Clive Sinclair on to you!

          Hello Ian,
as I understand it the LX-3 and 5 crop a 4/3 aspect ratio sensor to achieve either the 3:2 or 16:9 ratio. This is borne out by an increase in effective resolution by opting for the 4:3 ratio in settings for the LX-3 (referring to my wife's LX-3 manual).
Does the XZ-1 have the option to change aspect ratios in the settings? It would be interesting to know.

Edit: Just reading through the XZ-1 manual (page 41) it seems that you can do similar to the Panasonic LX and select the aspect ratio (4:3 16:9 3:2 or 6:6) for Jpegs at least.
It does say that RAWs are not cropped but the cropping info is retained, presumably for the Oly Viewer software.
          Regards Huw

No, it's like the Micro Four Thirds Lumix GH1 and GH2 - the sensor is over-sized for 4:3, enabling the most efficient use of the sensor area to support multiple aspect ratios. Basically, the parts of the image circle where the corners lie for the main formats supported are all on the sensor.

            LX5 formats:

            [4:3]3648x2736(10M)
            [3:2]3776x2520 (9.5M)
            [16:9]3968x2232 (9M)

So in a sense I was imprecise - it's not a 16:9 sensor, but it's not a cropped 4:3 sensor either. It's an over-size sensor with the extreme corners of the sensor actually never used. I explained this in my article on the GH1 sensor a couple of years back on FTU:

            http://fourthirds-user.com/2009/04/t...sensor_yet.php

The XZ-1 has the same 4:3 aspect ratio pixel count as the LX5, but the manual clearly states that other aspect ratios are cropped from the 4:3 maximum size. No format can be wider than 3648 pixels on the XZ-1, but 3:2 and 16:9 are on the LXs.

            Hope that makes sense

              Thanks Ian
Ah OK, so not the same sensor then.
I wonder if it is Panasonic sourced though.

                Hello all,

Thanks for the suggestions. Hhhmmmm, hadn't realised there was an Oly option. Will get down to the camera shop to have a look at this, and at the Pano option as well.

                Cheers,

                Pete.
