probably not the best example but this wren posed for me in deep shade under a walkway yesterday and I was also shooting into the light with a bright reflection off the water .my personal feeling is theres nothing any other system including the much vaunted nikons DR could have done any better to rescue this shot ,first shot is the consecutive frame as shot followed by the edited file

The DR recovery of modern M4/3 cameras is indeed very good, as your examples show us Geoff, and holds up well against APSC and many 35mm FF.
However I'm not quite sure about your 'nothing any other system' quote. Not meaning to be biased, and I know I am coming at this from a possibly privileged position but the X2D has unbelievable highlight and shadow recovery, especially shadow. I guess a sensor that is 6.8x larger than M4/3 and a 15 stop dynamic range has a lot to do with that.
If you scroll down to ( a fair way down ) ..... RAW FILE VERSATILITY you will see a couple of examples. I was blown away when I first saw this.
That said I doubt I would have captured that wren with my X2D ..... horses for courses

LOL if I had the money and the health itβs a fair probability I would be using a different system ( allegedly) but at 77 and with a dodgy ticker , and a fairly basic state pension I have to get the best out of available gear ..make the most of what you have Simon fate has a way of kicking the ladder out from under you π€©π€©when you least expect it .
But the blad is something to drool over you lucky sod π΅βπ«π΅βπ«π΅βπ«π€

TBH Geoff I think few of us really 'need' more than what modern M4/3 has to offer, the all round capabilities of the system are more than good enough now. Being honest I personally don't 'need' the 'Blad and could easily remain perfectly happy with my Pen-F, but then how often ( at least for me ) has logic and amateur photography ever gone hand in hand? Assuming money isn't the deciding factor of course.
I very much enjoy looking at your bird photo's and think they ( and your ability ) demonstrate just how good M4/3 is
. This is an area where the X2D would certainly struggle, I cannot see bird photography being its forte, unless they are stuffed
You are right too, you never know what's around the corner or what fate has in store. My motto is " love, be kind and never look down on those less fortunate than yourself - instead offer them a helping hand "
I'm waiting on a pre-order lens at present .... the 38mm, this is the same focal length as my Pana/leica 15mm ( both equiv to 30mm on 35mm FF ) . Once I have it ( goodness knows when though as dealers worldwide are getting just one a month at present ) I plan to do a comparison between the X2D and M4/3 ( in this case my pen-F ) , not to show how superior the X2D is but just how good M4/3 is
BTW ... keep those cracking bird photo's coming, and if we Walians ever get a 'meet & great' day sorted you can have a play with the 'Blad if you like
