In the last three days I've been having time out issues with the forum. Each time I've been posting a reply to a thread and the forum just sits there and then times out. After that it takes a half hour or so before I can reconnect to the forum. But oddly the posts I was trying to make at the time do seem to appear?
Anyone else having these problems or am I the next victim of the forum gremlins now that Walti has been sorted out

      You are not alone Phill

The dreaded problem is back in full strength here also. It took me 30 mins to get into the site over the last 3 days. I was about to concede defeat this morning when it finally worked. I appreciate this is a free, non-paying forum but considering the number of months this problem has been occurring, it really is unacceptable.

        Re: Forum issues

I think we had a double whammy yesterday - for some unexpected reason the server was spidered by an Amazon bot and it ignored all the configurations for limiting indexing activity. Maybe this had something to do with Black Friday.

At the same time, about a week earlier Google 'expired' deliberate settings to moderate indexing intensity. I only noticed this recently and have now re-instated the throttling of Google indexing.

There was the usual increased activity this morning but much less than yesterday. I did not receive any notifications that the server was timing out, although I wasn't able to monitor it myself as I was out.

Fingers crossed things will calm down again.

And of course, I'm very sorry that many here have been inconvenienced.

So this morning the peak load has been significantly lower but more sustained, so there was a 4 minute outage. I'm working with the hosting company to further improve the situation right now.

            Re: Forum issues

The situation does seem to be steadily improving and while server load did rise for a while at the usual morning period, it was only a tenth of the intensity that it was yesterday and caused no noticeable problems.

This is the fourth consecutive day of improvement, so fingers crossed it stays that way.

In the mean time our hosting company has come up with some interesting data that we need to chew through and possibly act on to maximise the server resilience.

Thanks for that, Alf - something is very wrong with TapaTalk on the forum at present. I am working with TapaTalk to resolve issues, including server overloading in the mornings. I will add your observation to the dossier.

PS Have you tried the site on your phone without TapaTalk? - it's small display friendly now.

The behaviour of "New Topics" seems to have changed overnight.
Previously, when viewing a thread in this list, on pressing the browser Back Button the List would be redisplayed with the threads that you have viewed within the current session 'un'highlighted.

Now, after clicking on a thread and viewing the posts which have been added since my previous visit, when I use the browser Back Button to return to the list of New Topics, the thread which I have just viewed has disappeared from the list.

Also, when viewing a post in this list, if I click on a thunbnail to view the image(s) and then use the browser Back Button to return to the post in order to view any later posts in that thread, I am returned to the (now updated) New Topics list and - of course - the thread is was viewing has vanished from the updated list. This makes it impossible to view the subsequent posts in that thread.

Sorry about that - I can't explain why you were logged out. Let me know if the problem persists.

Unfortunately, we could not carry over the Thanks functionality from the old forum but I am looking at other ways to introduce extra ways of showing appreciation on posts.

Not sure this is that different to before as I used to loose the thread previously viewed if I used the back button. I got round it by switching to posts from a day or two and then they all showed up as they should. The time bound post view of course is no longer available in the new forum so that's no longer a fix. In the old forum Ian had suggested it was a cookie problem but I tried clearing everything out a few times but I could never sort it so just used the work around. Just thought I'd comment in case it helped.

                          Ian,
Not sure what changes you have made today, but the problem I previously described with threads disappearing (instead of just becoming unhighlighted) when I pressed the browser BacKButton on an item in the New Topics list has gone way. Thank you.
I expect you already know this - the forum kept timing out and becoming completely unavailable at around 07:30 this morning. (FYI, my broadband is provided by PlusNet - which I guess is really BT by any other name).

I may have discovered what the problem is.

You may notice that this page is not 'secure' - nothing to be concerned about; it's because Alf's signature graphic is linked via a non-encrypted url ( alfbranch can you modify this in your settings to https:// ?)

Somehow we end up with a http (not https) page and that will log you out because your site cookies are expecting the https version of the page address. This also explains the tab/order weirdness.

To cut a long story short - I need to look at the site's handling of http/https redirects.

I will update here once that has been done.

Taptalk is now not working at all it won't let me view below the main forum menu.

This is not the only forum I use on Taptalk I have no issues elsewhere. I would prefer to use taptalk than a browser it is easier for me.

No, TapaTalk is fine - we wouldn't support it otherwise, but while we try to fix our implementation you might find it useful to have the web browser ready, something on a smartphone that wasn't very feasible before the forum upgrade. TapaTalk does, however, not let you use all the features that the native forum offers.
