  • Update on Topaz performance

Today I’ve finished (for the time being) my Computer upgrade, looking to speed up processing times. With the OM1, I have more photos than ever and time is scarce.
Topaz suite is quite heavy in terms of computer load and has been an issue at times, I’ve shared some performance data in previous posts and this time I would like also to share with you that finally, I have processing times of around 1-2 seconds per photo.

Previous test after upgrading to Nvidia 3060 GPU showed times of about 3 to 10 seconds using a Ryzen 3600X and I was already happy with it, but thanks to Puget Systems that finally is including Topaz in their testing for professional computers, I realized that the CPU played an important role in loading and unloading the photos around system memory and disks so I decided to upgrade also my CPU to a Ryzen 5800X. This dropped the previous times to almost nothing, so I even happier now.

I was also having increasing bad performance in DxO (I use it for RAW development), also went very fast now.

My current configuration is: Ryzen 5800X, Nvidia 3060 12GB, 32 GB system memory, two m.2 disk Samsung 970 Evo plus, motherboard B550. Many parts are bough in the second hand market.

That looks a really good setup. It shows that it isn't realistic to use an old low powered system for these new heavy duty AI apps. (Or for video rendering, the other type of work that needs intensive power.)

That's really impressive - it's certainly interesting that the CPU now figures in the performance, but thinking about it, massively reducing a bottleneck (the GPU) will expose others - and this is the CPU 👍

Another update in my second PC. After a crash in my old GPU 1050ti, I replaced it with a RTX 3070ti that is now working well but… I’ve found a result consistent with the previous one, related with bottlenecks, as my CPU here is a relatively modest Intel 8700 with a limited 310 motherboard using PCI v3 (the new card is capable of v4), so the final results are a bit slower than a RTX 3060 in a better CPU+motherboard combination using a Ryzen 5800X with a B550, having PCI v4.

I plan to put the 3070ti in the other PC at some moment, I will let you know the final performance when I do the replacement.
