    Re: LR preview files?

The other point about previews is that if you create full quality versions it speeds up post processing.

Given that disk is relatively inexpensive these days I create max quality previews when I import into LR. Although it takes a few minutes at the time when you sit down to look at the images it speeds that up significantly. For me that is a cost effective speed increase compared to other PC upgrades. I actually store mine on a SS disk so it's even faster.

    cheers

    Hec

Sorry having to create a couple of dummy posts as I can't enter the URL until I hit 6 posts, and I have to wait 30 seconds between posts....

Phill you can change the preview size here but anything less than 1440px is a little useless for viewing.

You cannot set it to delete standard previews only the full size previews that are generated when you view the image at 100% like when sharpening.

Lightroom works this way because it is a non-destructive editor. It keeps a record of all the changes you make so that you can revert to the original. The preview file is the image with changes. You can change the size of this within Lightroom but if you make it too small lightrom will have to recreate it often. You can set Lightroom to delete the preview after a number of days to save disk space on images you don't view regularly.

Not really, if you delete them all images (previews and info) will be lost to Lightroom and you will not be able to view them in LR.

You can and should write the info to the Raw XMP file then when you remove it from the LR catalog your editing info will be saved and LR can read it again if at some time you wish to import that image back into LR, this is fine if like me you always export a high quality jpeg for viewing and using.

But saying that if you then have the jpegs in the LR catalog you will still have previews. and 5000 of them at standard size take up 2GB.

This is the reason I only use LR as a raw converter and prefer to use something like acdsee for my dam program for finished jpegs. My data base for 5000 image in acdsee is 2mb compared to 2 Gig.

Phil - I assume they're cached versions of images so that the library view can be shown quickly.

started a topic LR preview files?

    LR preview files?

Since installing LR I seem to be generating hundreds of LR preview files that just sit in the library folder on my C drive. What are they for and do I need them? They are fairly small but they seem to be multiplying rapidly so will in time occupy quite a sizable space of hard drive.
Working...
