Re: Olympus 300mm F4 Pro Lens

Thanks Ron for the heads up. I agree with Tony why do reviewers take so many pictures at smaller apertures. If I am buying a fast lens my main interest is its performance fully open. I think the most interesting part of this review is the value for money bit. If the IQ of the lens matches the other lenses then it could well be a great value lens for those who have a need for it.

With a lens like this I expect it to be used fully open all the time, especially with the 1.4x TC on it. The sample shots I put up in the gallery were both at F4, at ISO 1600 (again I think this will be commensurate with real world usage) and the shutter speed was still a lowly 1/400 sec. OK, the PEN-F launch day was not a super bright mid summer's day but it was far from miserable. I would have liked a faster shutter speed and a lower ISO but its not going to happen here in Blighty all that often.

True. It is slightly disappointing that the lens is not sharpest wide open. The review shows it quite a bit sharper at f/5.6, presumably f/8 with the teleconverter on. I hope most of the increase in sharpness will be obtained by stopping down only a third or half a stop.

Re: Olympus 300mm F4 Pro Lens

There are some more sample images from the lens on this 300 f/4 group on Flickr:

          https://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/

They are rather variable in quality and I think serve to demonstrate that the results will depend largely on the skill of the photographer.

Nothing new then, long lenses have always been operator dependent. I've seen some truly awful results from good lenses.

I've never used a telephoto that wasn't better a stop down. What a lot of people don't realise is that a lot drop off badly once you start stopping them down to any degree.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

It seems the lens is now available in the USA and Australia.

I believe that the official release date for UK/Europe is 26th March however, I've heard rumours that it may start to appear from tomorrow 26th February.

I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to try one out.

I've heard rumours that we are not likely to see stocks here (UK) until well into the summer

Camera in the post has quite a good reputation but you would lose the Olympus Warranty though the seller does offer their own 12 month warranty. I think in this case I would rather buy from an official Olympus Dealer and have the lens guaranteed for two and a half years by Olympus.

I would be surprised if this lens was available with 1 day "dispatch" unless it is on a slow boat from China. My experience is these "cheap" deals are often sold with stock showing but no stock is held in this country and you will wait months before it arrives if at all and they will have already cashed your money within hours of you placing the order. The information I was given from Olympus reps is that there were something like 500 made in the first batch (world wide) and it would be sometime after this first batch before the next ones are manufactured. I was told this lens was one of the most difficult that Olympus have manufactured.

I was looking at the 300mm f/5 on camerapricebuster and clicked on the top listing which was Camera Centre UK. It shows the lens as being in stock. Does this sound right or is there something in the small print which I haven't noticed?

Yup they are showing that they have a preorder for the lens in stock.... rather than the lens itself!

I have just received an email from Clifton Cameras ( www.cliftoncameras.co.uk ) about various promo's etc. It also says they have a 300mm F4 in store this Saturday ( tomorrow ), Monday and Tuesday for anyone to try out if they wish to 'pop-in'. I don't know when they will have stock for sale though.

                              Kind regards, Simon

Re: Olympus 300mm F4 Pro Lens

Yesterday I received a newsletter email from Olympus Europe titled "Now in stores: 300mm IS PRO lens - exclusively tested by Visionary Marcin Dobas."
I emailed to ask them when it was going to be available in the UK and I got a quick reply this morning saying:

"The lens will start being available around 27 March 2016, although different stores may have slightly different delivery dates."

So, not much longer to wait now (it's only been 2 years), although I can't see many stores being open on Easter Sunday.
